Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock

Would you like to work on an exciting, large scale and long-term project within our Naval Ships business? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock to work on the Type 26 programme at our site in either Scotstoun or Filton.

As a Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock, you will be supporting the shock design of the Type 26 Platform, reducing the ship's vulnerability to underwater explosion from threats such as mines and torpedoes.

This is a developmental role and will provide you with the opportunity to lead a small team on a high-profile programme, liaising with experienced design engineering teams across the platform.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock will involve:

Ensuring suppliers are compliant with the Type 26 shock requirements by assessing their designs, shock qualification proposals and shock results

Acting as the technical lead within engineering for the Composite Armour procurement package to ensure the armour solution applied to Type 26 is optimised to balance the needs of all stakeholders within the project and in support of the Magazine Safety Case

Liaising with the composite armour supplier and supply chain lead to ensure timely delivery of engineering data for the armour solution

Providing support to Engineering Manager - Vulnerability and Shock in Assurance and Acceptance events, Assurance Reviews and Quarterly Margin Reviews

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer - Vulnerability & Shock:

Essential Skills:

Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Mechanical Engineering/Systems Engineering/Naval Architecture/STEM

Experience of designing equipment to meet structural requirements

Knowledge and understanding of the engineering life cycle and the relationship between activities in different phases of the engineering lifecycle

Technical knowledge of modelling and verification techniques for transversals

Desirable Skills:

Knowledge and understanding of Whole Ship systems and equipment

Technical knowledge of platform design and integration for naval surface or submarines

Experience using CAD/Foran

Previous experience of managing or supervising a team of engineers

You will have excellent communication skills with an ability to supervise a small team. You will be flexible in your approach to work, with a good eye for detail and accuracy and will confident working within a fast-paced environment.
