Are you a highly experienced manager within the field of vacuum technology with a proven track record of providing technical leadership and developing vacuum engineers? Are you an experienced project manager demonstrating both budgetary and technical control? The UK Atomic Energy Authority has an excellent opportunity for a Vacuum Projects Section Leader to proactively lead and manage the Vacuum Projects Section providing both tactical and strategic direction and decision making to deliver the JET and MAST-U programmes in support of corporate strategies.
Responsibilities include management and leadership of the section to achieve Authority objectives; staff management, motivation and development. Proposing and implementing future strategies for JET and MAST-U including plant refurbishments, enhancements and major upgrades; engendering a robust safety culture within the section and promoting first class communications both within UKAEA and with the Eurofusion community.
Key accountabilities/responsibilities include:
-Manage the installation, commissioning, maintenance, enhancement and operation of the vacuum and gas fuelling systems throughout the project lifecycle.
-Manage the production of all necessary maintenance documentation and schedules including maintenance contracts with OEM`s, spares inventories, etc.
-Manage the production of all necessary technical documentation to support plasma operations.
-MAST-U VECO (Vacuum Envelope Co-ordinating Officer) ensuring the integrity of the tokamak vacuum.
-Vacuum interface for all international associations conducting plasma operations.
-To lead the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of the (radiation hard, tritium compatible) vacuum systems for the DTE2 campaigns.
-Primary vacuum interface with the JEU and Plasma Operations Group (POG) for the DTE2 campaigns.
-Line management responsibility for the section`s staff, in particular to provide staff performance management, motivation and development utilising Culham`s performance management and development processes. Ensure appropriate cascade of UKAEA`s corporate mission and goals.
-Promote and maintain first class standards of housekeeping in all the operational areas the section is responsible for.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. Knowledge skills and experience
-Degree or Post Graduate qualification in a vacuum engineering related subject (Mechanical Engineering, Physics).
-Demonstrable extensive experience of vacuum systems and technologies.
-Extensive experience of interpreting residual gas analyser traces.
-Extensive experience of helium trace gas and other such methods of vacuum leak detection.
-Demonstrable experience of high-level fault finding and rectification.
-Incorporated or Chartered Status (eg CEng, MInstP)
-Demonstrable expertise in vessel conditioning of large vacuum vessels.
-Experience of working in environments subject to radiological control.
-A significant proportion of the vacuum systems and infrastructure is in operational areas that cannot be accessed during machine operations, therefore fault finding and remedial work is often conducted outside of normal working hours.
-Rostered on-call officer in support of operations.
