Job description

As part of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) manage a vast range of complex and technical projects. Engineering in DE&S involves specifying, testing and accepting, integrating and supporting some of the most cutting-edge technologies in the world. These technologies enable the Armed Forces to operate safely and successfully in humanitarian, peacekeeping and war fighting operations worldwide. The engineering challenges we face are immense and the opportunities are wide-ranging, working closely with industry suppliers and Armed Forces customers.

The scheme is accredited by major engineering institutions and offers huge development opportunities.

The location for most of our Graduates is Bristol, but whilst on the scheme you will undertake placements in a variety of locations across the UK, and potentially overseas. This will enable you to build a portfolio of evidence towards professional registration at IEng or CEng and to gain knowledge in a variety of areas within your technical discipline.

You will receive:

  • On-going support throughout the scheme from the Graduate management,
    dedicated, experienced Mentor and Placement Delivery Managers
  • Our investment in your personal and technical training and development, giving you excellent opportunities to gain specific technical experience, whilst broadening and deepening the key skills and behaviours specific to working in our large successful government department
  • Depending on Business need you may also be given the opportunity to undertake training and further study to gain specialist knowledge applicable to the role you will occupy at the end of your training

After successful completion of the scheme you will be deployed into a delivery team and apply your skills within an application area (Air, Land, Maritime, Mission & Combat, Nuclear or Weapons Systems) and will continue to be supported towards incorporated or Chartered Engineer status as part of a Technical Discipline.

Currently there is particular demand for applicants in the Disciplines of:

  • Sensors and Electronic Systems
  • Software Engineering (Inc. Cyber)
  • Naval Architecture
  • Electrical Power and Distribution
  • Nuclear Engineering (Potential opportunity to undertake a funded MSc Programme)

Relevant degrees include (but are not limited to ) Electronic, Mechatronics, Control Systems, Robotics, Communications, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering and Power Distribution, Nuclear Engineering,

The remaining Disciplines include:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Aero Engineering
  • Acquisition Safety and Environmental Protection
  • Systems Engineering and Integration (Potential opportunity to undertake a funded MSc programme)
  • Quality Assurance
  • Science (Limited opportunity)

Degrees related to these disciplines are of relevance and candidates in oversubscribed disciplines may be offered another opportunity. Your Degree must be accredited by one of the Engineering or Science Council members (for example IMechE, IET, IMarEST, RINA, RAeS, IOP, IMA, or BCS). Responsibilities

The force behind the armed forces, DE&S is a highly specialised, branch of the MoD, operating with a budget of £178 billion over the next 10 years. From the procurement of aircraft carriers to the provision of food, we ensure our armed forces have the equipment and support they need to achieve their operations. We employ over 12,000 people across more than 150 locations around the world.

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering the most technically complex programmes in Defence. We employ over 1400 people and have an annual spend of c. £3.5 billion.

Engineering is the largest business area within DE&S – and it’s one of the most fulfilling too. Qualifications

Candidates must have or be studying for a degree in an accredited subject (see above for details, and also note exception for Nuclear degrees) and be on track to achieve a minimum 2:2 Bachelor degree or above by August 2020. (There may be some discipline restrictions for those with 2:2 level qualification)
