Hours: f/t 37.5 pw

You’ll join the Electronics Laboratory at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) leading the construction, testing and design support of novel investigational and research medical devices. You’ll also organise the lab and support the calibration and management of complex, possibly non-CE marked medical devices in conjunction with the Medical Device Management team. Clinical Engineering provides research and innovation, life cycle management of over 50,000 items of medical equipment to stringent quality standards.

You’ll need to have a practical electronic engineering background together with project management capabilities and attention to detail which is vital to ensure the safe design and development of medical devices. The candidate should be able to demonstrate good engineering practice and be able to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Medical Device Innovation

Medical Device Innovation is involved in the development of novel medical devices, mainly used within the trust to support research and where there is an unmet clinical requirement. In addition, the service offers medical device regulatory affairs guidance, undertakes medical device research and to develop specialist expertise to advise Clinical Engineering colleagues on medical device testing and regulations.

About Us

The Directorate of Medical Imaging & Medical Physics (MIMP) is the largest Service Directorate within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Medical Physics employs 135 staff (35 scientists and 100 technical staff) providing a variety of scientific and clinical services to the Trust. The Department of Medical Physics is divided into six sections each managed by a Section Head responsible to the Scientific Director. The Clinical Engineering Section is divided into two groups – Medical Device Management (MDM) and Medical Device Innovation (MDI).

The Clinical Engineering Department at STH supports and advances patient care, ensuring that the risks associated with the acquisition and use of medical devices are minimised. The service operates an externally certified quality management system (ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016) and comprises of a 73 strong workforce, comprising qualified engineers, clinical scientists, clinical technologists, administrative support staff and library operatives.

About you

You’ll need to demonstrate proven experience in the construction of complex electronic instrumentation and hold a degree in an engineering discipline; a candidate with an HND or equivalent engineering qualification may be considered if they have proven substantial practical engineering experience in the construction of complex electronic instrumentation. Although experience of construction of novel medical devices is desirable it is not essential as further training will be given.
