About the Central Laser Facility

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world’s leading laser centres, providing scientists mainly from the UK and continental Europe with access to an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology.  The CLF has around 180 staff and its function - user facility, international research – makes it a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place.  It has a welcoming and inclusive culture, and you will find that people will naturally help and support you.

The CLF is building a new laser centre - the Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) and is seeking new team members to help to build this and to contribute to our existing facilities. EPAC is an £81M facility that will use lasers developed by our team to drive new types of novel particle and radiation beams that can be applied to a wide range of problems in science and industry. About the role

You will join a team of Electrical and Control engineers playing a critical part in designing control system architecture supporting the work carried out by EPAC.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Getting user requirements and translating them into working solutions
  • Evaluating the best technical setup for the future of the facility
  • Collaborating with mechanical designers, software engineers and scientists to build new systems
  • Designing and commissioning PLC based control systems
  • Ensuring all project schematics and designs detail are accurately monitored and maintained.

The role requires the candidate to be self-motivated, to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will work closely with research scientists, electrical engineers and leading university research groups from Europe and the UK.

About You

You will have an HND in either electrical engineering, or electrical and electronic engineering along with knowledge and practical experience of modern electrical engineering, components and techniques.

With working knowledge of PLC ladder logic you should also have experience of working in a supporting role and task management awareness.

To be considered for the Band E position, as well as the above you will have experience working developing systems from customers’ requirements to commissioning, as well as proven skills in designing and programming PLC based systems.
