Electro-Mechanical Engineer

Location - Reading / Basingstoke Area

Salary - dependent on experience plus contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, additional benefits and an excellent work / life balance including a 9-day working fortnight and flexible working hours (role dependent). A salary sacrifice scheme is also available.

We will consider candidates looking for full time or part time hours.

AWE has been named in the Sunday Times top 25 big companies to work for in 2019.

AWE are looking for an experienced electro-mechanical engineer to join an existing team responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of robust, miniature weapon safety mechanisms. Currently made up of around 12 engineers and scientists, the team works together with our peers in the USA to develop capability and understanding of all aspects of these specialist products from the underpinning science through to the system qualification of these highly reliable clockwork-like devices that can survive space flight and vehicle accidents. We have our own laboratory to support this mission.

With most of the team concentrating on the pure mechanical aspects, we are looking for someone to assist with the cross domain electro-mechanical elements, particularly monitoring, testing and test equipment.

Applicants must have a broad engineering foundation with understanding of both the electrical/electronic and mechanical engineering domains as well as how they are interfaced.

Previous applied experience of electro-mechanical system design is essential and the use of ECAD and MCAD tools would be beneficial, though further training can be provided.

Though not to be considered a check list, candidates would benefit from knowledge of ANY of the following:

  • Sensor selection - particularly position type sensors such as encoders or hall effect switches
  • Prime movers - particularly motors and solenoids
  • Product testing - mechanical or electrical/electronic
  • Test equipment design - from concept through to in service support
  • PCB and flex cable design
  • Product packaging
  • Human factors

Ideally you will be degree qualified in a relevant engineering field or have equivalent career learning.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
