About the role

STFC’s RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of world-class space research and technology development. We’ve had significant involvement in over 210 space missions and operate at the forefront of UK Space Research.

We have one exciting opportunity fora Senior/Electronics Technician to join the Production & Software Group in RAL Space primarily in an inspection role with opportunity to also participate in manufacture of spaceflight hardware. The Production & Software Group is within the Imaging Systems Division which has a long-standing heritage of excellence in Space flight going back over 50 years. We build electronic systems for spaceflight and hence many of our projects are unique, offering a fantastic opportunity for the Electronics Technicians to plan, input into and organise the manufacture rather than exclusively working from drawings.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Inspection: Inspection of electronic assemblies to ESA or IPC standards (training will be given at RAL followed by certification in Portsmouth’s ESA Training School)
  • Electronic assembly: Soldering conventional and surface mount components by hand onto PCBs to IPC and ESA Standards
  • Electrical assembly: Making up cables or harnesses, this could include either solder, crimp or screw terminal connections in a variety of test fixtures, instruments or robotic rovers
  • Electrical/Electronic repairs and modifications
  • Electro Mechanical: Creating test harness or jigs to aid the design and development of Space related systems
  • Documentation:  Creating detailed drawings of wiring or cable routing on prototype assemblies, so that the job in question can always be repeated
  • Assembling kits of components for Production.

About you

With previous experience of electronics assembly inspection in the aerospace/high reliability industry you may join us as a Band C Electronics Technician or a Band D Senior Electronics Technician depending on your level of experience and your ESA certification level. We fully support all of our Technicians to achieve Operator or Operator/Inspector level certification offering you an excellent opportunity to hone and develop your skills.

You will also be experienced in using production management software, as well as being comfortable using Microsoft Outlook. You will show good knowledge of electrical and electromechanical components with the ability to solve technical problems and enthusiasm to continue your development.

For the Senior post, we are looking to find a technician certified to ESA category 3 (operator) or category 4 (operator/inspector) who has previous experience of or the ability to train and supervise junior staff as well as knowledge of Mil-Spec/Space Qualified Components, knowledge of a non-conformance system and knowledge of electronic components.
