Job Details

South Western Railway’s (SWR) near £1 billion investment will introduce a brand new 750-carriage strong fleet of Class 701s trains, completely transforming passengers’ experiences travelling on our Reading, Windsor and West London suburban routes.

Built by Bombardier at the firm’s Litchurch Lane factory in Derby, the first of the 90 new trains has been delivered. As the programme gathers pace over the coming weeks and months ahead of their eventual introduction on the network, we are looking for further New Train Acceptance Engineers to be based at Bombardier’s Derby site.

The Role

As key part of the SWR project team, you will manage the quality of build, carrying out First Article Inspections in conjunction with Bombardier, including witnessing type tests for new components and staged inspections of units in build. This critical role will cover all pre-provisional, provisional and acceptance inspections throughout the project.

Responsible for protecting SWRs interests during acceptance inspections, you will be undertaking these inspections with Bombardier and Rock Rail. That means there will be different priorities for different parties, but you will be expected to focus your decision making only on delivering the highest quality and reliability of the fleet for SWR.

There are several phases to this project, therefore you must be willing to be flexible and accept ad-hoc tasks and projects as required through the phases.

Based in Derby, it is estimated that 80% of your time will be spent in the factory, visits to Wimbledon, Eastleigh and other SWR sites will be required.

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications

Whilst rolling stock knowledge is desirable, it is not essential. If no rolling stock experience, then you must have significant experience in an audit or quality checking role, in a technical environment where checks in accordance with detailed and complex specifications are carried out.

You will possess strong supplier management skills, working at a detailed level and with a confident and authoritative manner to resist pressure to accept something until it is correct. First-class decision making skills and judgement are equally important. You should also be able to manage your own time and workload.

Continuity is important when inspecting trains so someone that is going to stay focused and inspect the 90th train as thoroughly as the 1st is crucial in this role.

To Apply

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join a forward-looking, growing and successful business. So, in addition to the competitive salary there is a package of valuable benefits including an excellent pension scheme.
