Principal Engineer-Product Safety

Would you like to play a pivotal role within Product Safety for our Submarine Programmes? We currently have an opportunity to join our team as a Principal Engineer; this will be based at our sites in Barrow, Bristol, Filton and Weymouth

Within Product Safety, as a Principal Engineer you will be supporting the Engineering Delivery Organisations in all facets of Product Safety engineering throughout all stages of Life Cycle Management.

These roles will provide you with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of safety management and safety case production this includes safety requirements capture and management, hazard identification and analysis, hazard data management, application of ALARP principle, creation/maintenance of safety documentation and continuous improvement of the safety management system. This exposure to a variety of facets of the function alongside continuous in house training will help you to further grow and develop as part of the function.

Your Main Responsibilities as a Principal Engineer will include:

Undertaking Product Safety functional design analysis and/or providing specialist Safety advice within your scope of responsibility. Providing evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose of structure, systems, components as well as Whole Boat design

Confirming beyond reasonable doubt by review, surveillance and audit that those assumptions underpinning engineering data, analysis methodologies as well as interpretation of results have been validated in support of the Product Safety cases

Contributing to identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and managing the resulting change embodiment activities from a Product Safety perspective

Liaising with both internal and external customers as required ensuring that their Product Safety requirements are adequately supported also that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate as well as agreed

Undertaking peer reviews as well as checking/verification tasks as directed

Providing assurance to the Design Authority as to the adequacy and robustness of the Safety Case alongside supporting documentation

Providing support to the Certificate of Design activities appropriate to the discipline and from a Product Safety perspective

Essential Criteria for this role:

Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Degree qualified or equivalent qualification

Evidence of working towards Chartership

Desirable Criteria:

Experience of Product Safety Cases and Management Systems to defence or other internationally recognised standards e.g. IEC61508, DO178, DEF-STAN-00-56, and ARP-4761

Capability to review and appraise Product Safety Cases, influencing others with constructive feedback

Ability to develop others in Safety Engineering practices, including delivering diverse Product Safety training

At the same time you will have excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with the wider team when required. The ability influence others, whilst putting forward clear, concise and credible reasoning to support judgements
