Principal Engineer (Product Safety Assurance)

Would you like to work within the Engineering Product Assurance Department (EPAD), a cross-functional team, influencing how Product Safety is delivered within the Business, our Products and Services through all phases of the Engineering Life Cycle Management?

We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer (Product Safety Assurance) at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Principal Engineer you will be playing a key role in the independent assurance of Product Safety across business functions and our products and services, which include the Astute and Dreadnought Class Submarines for the Royal Navy. You will be liaising with other business Programmes and Functions to deliver our Corporate, Business and Partner Product Safety Objectives.

In the EPAD Product Safety Assurance Team, you will be supported by and work with Business and Submarine technical specialists in the delivery of our Engineering Product Assurance objectives. This role offers excellent career development and career progression opportunities.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer (Product Safety Assurance) will involve:

Providing independent Product Safety Management, design and analysis expertise in support of our business objectives, products and services programmes

Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager Product Safety Assurance

Coaching/mentoring and giving technical advice to peers and junior members within the EPAD on Product Safety matters

Advising and recommending to the Engineering Manager Product Safety Assurance on the appropriate strategic direction and planning for the department, on both Product Safety Technical Design and business matters

Delivering Corporate and Business Product Safety objectives within the EPAD and the provision of specialist Product Safety advice to other Business Functions in the delivery of their Corporate and Business Product Safety objectives. This is in the context of the four principles of Product Safety - Accountability, Level of Safety, Conforming Product and Learning & Sharing

Assisting and deputising for the Engineering Manager Product Safety Assurance at key meetings and events

Providing assurance that the required levels of safety are delivered in our products & services throughout all phases of Engineering Life Cycle Management

Delivering independent Product Safety Assurance evidence through Engineering Life Cycle Management key hold points that products and services conform to their Design Intent. Including assurance of product and services at functional integration and system levels

Liaising with other Business functions and teams to ensure successful integration of Product Safety within our business processes

Identifying and promoting Learning & Sharing matters related to Product Safety and provide assurance that Product Safety Learning & Sharing is considered and embodied across the business and products and services

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer (Product Safety Assurance):

Essential:

Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Product Safety delivery, including safety case production and safety management activities, applied to maritime platforms or within comparable safety critical industries

Application or experience of Engineering Life Cycle Management

Influencing people both face-to-face and in writing

Honours Degree in STEM related discipline or equivalent qualification or experience

Desirable:

Understanding of whole boat design, functional interfaces, relationships and dependencies

Thorough knowledge of submarine design Product Safety policies, standards and processes (Inc. JSP 430, DSA01, DSA02 DMR, Def Stan 0055 & 0056, Def Stan 02-207)

Understanding of Submarines business, including policies, processes and functional department's interfaces/dependencies

MSc or working towards a Safety Engineering degree

Chartered Engineer or in process of working towards (or equivalent)

You must possess excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate business and technical Product Safety knowledge to a variety of stakeholders. You must be a self-starter and also have the ability to influence others, whilst putting forward clear, concise and credible reasoning to support judgements.
