Small Craft Design Engineer
Would you like to play a key role in providing design and drafting capabilities cross a broad spectrum of projects within the Small Boats Design team? We currently have a vacancy for a Small Craft Design Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.
You will join the Small Boats sector, which is responsible for the design, build and support of small boats to the military market. It is a small close knit team benefiting from the stability and support of the wider Maritime Services business. With a new 7 year support contract for the MOD and a rapidly growing portfolio of new products and designs, the sector has a growing workload which requires us to expand our engineering capabilities.
As a Small Craft Design Engineer, you will be working as part of a dedicated multi-functional team, participating in a wide range of design activities supporting both new and in-service craft, from concept through to delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic engineer keen on covering the full range of design from concept through to delivery.
Your main responsibilities as a Small Craft Design Engineer will involve:
Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings, for a wide range of products from small components to whole vessel systems. Produce drawings in accordance with BS8888 Engineering Drawing standards.
Carry out small craft systems and marine engineer design tasks.
Provide sound estimates for engineering work carried out and liaise with sub-contract manufacturers and suppliers regarding design solutions.
Implement design changes and provide post-delivery support and resolve obsolescence issues.
Carry out engineering calculations under the guidance of senior members of the team as required for the project.
Ensuring that work is undertaken in accordance with Company, Safety, Environmental, contractual and local business processes, standards, procedures and documentation
Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients
Participation in the preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by the bid manager in order to provide costed proposals for future work
Your skills and qualifications:
Degree qualified in the (BEng) in Marine Engineering, Small Craft Design, Marine Technology, Marine Engineering or Mechanical or equivalent experience in the field (new graduates with relevant qualifications will be considered)
Demonstrable knowledge and, ideally, experience in at least three of the following:
3D modelling, ideally using Siemens NX, and 2D drafting for production and manufacturing.
Component and systems design
Composites design and/or production experience
Knowledge of commercial and/or military small craft.
Knowledge of Small Craft design standards and processes (IMO, MCA, ISO, DefStan, Classification Rules)
Knowledge of Small Craft systems design including electrical, fuel bilge etc.
Experience of design from concept through to delivery.
Awareness of Product Safety and SHE and the participation in HAZIDs
Marine engineering experience/knowledge
