Would you like to play a key role within the Subsurface Trainers projects, being responsible for system definition and design decision-making? We currently have a vacancy for a Sub-Surface Trainers System Design Authority at our site in Portsmouth.

As the Sub-Surface Trainers System Design Authority, you will be accountable for the safety and performance of the training system products via technical oversight of the entire development lifecycle starting from requirements, through design and implementation, to support.

This role will also require you to provide technical oversight to the team involved in developing future technologies for the training systems.

Your main responsibilities as a Sub-Surface Trainers System Design Authority will involve:

Act as the Technical Authority for the entire range of training systems (products) in the sub-surface training area, defining the requirements, interfaces and trade-offs required to meet the product, programme, business and customer needs

Interface with and influence external customers/stakeholders to shape customer requirements through close working; interfacing with customers, suppliers and other functions, acting as an ambassador for training systems engineering to these groups

Guide (technically lead) the technical design processes and resultant solutions through the lifecycle; retaining focus on the technical compliance, system complexity, 'design for' trade-offs and schedule constraints

Ensure the products meet all contractual, regulatory and legislative requirements

Provide technical support to the project manager, making recommendations on all technical aspects pertaining to the projects whilst ensuring the balance between technical risk and cost and schedule is fully understood for the solutions

Ensure that product changes and/or updates are in-line with future technology strategy, utilising common technologies with other programmes wherever possible

Lead internal design reviews for the systems. Act of the technical focus point for all LCM and external reviews, preparing and presenting technical aspects to those involved as required

Work in conjunction with the other SDAs ensuring that information and experience are spread amongst the community and adequate challenge is given to proposals, plans, private venture tasks, and design principles

Lead study proposals relating to the sub-surface trainers area, including report-writing presentations and estimating (system design aspects)

Support business winning and bid management activities as the technical lead for sub-surface trainer projects

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

A sound knowledge and experience of BAE Systems' engineering governance and lifecycle management processes, including design certification

The ability to perform system design and to take high-level solution decisions for complex training systems comprising both hardware and software, integrating bespoke applications and third-party applications

Experience of the design of software-intensive systems

Experience and knowledge of a variety of simulation techniques/approaches

Desirable:

Extensive experience of training and/or simulation systems design

A detailed knowledge and understanding of the Naval equipment and training domain and of the approaches available to meet training needs

Experience and knowledge of networked and virtualised systems design

Experience and knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems design

What we're looking for in you:

You will be a proactive individual, able to work with minimal supervision, who is capable of communicating effectively, both orally and written, with colleagues, clients and customers at all levels. This will allow you to explain difficult technical subject matters to non-specialists and others.

You will be a team player and be able to demonstrate a track record of working within successful teams.

You will also be a rational problem solver and able to assess risks, both technical, project and business related.
