Job Details

AWE is currently recruiting for an Applied Scientist / Experimental Physicist with simulation and coding experience

We have an opportunity for somebody with an aptitude for experimental work who is also capable of setting up, running and understanding simulations. Experience in radiation effects and/or EM would be beneficial. The role involves preparation for high-profile collaborative experimental campaigns working with US labs, as well as using our findings to contribute to the development of simulation codes, and using radiation transport coupled to particle-in-cell codes to model system and component response. A solid background in physics is essential.

Package: AWE offer a competitive salary, market leading contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, excellent work/life balance including a 9-day working fortnight and flexible working hours (role dependent). A salary sacrifice scheme is also available. We will consider candidates looking for full time or part time hours.

AWE has been named in the Sunday Times top 25 big companies to work for in 2019.

The SGEMP team, within Radiation Science Group, specialises in validation of complex models that cannot be tested in full, aiming to understand the electrical effects of high-fluence irradiation of systems and materials. In order to do this we use some of the world's largest experimental facilities to replicate radiation environments of interest, fielding representative experiments to isolate physical phenomena that we need to be able to simulate.

The Role will consist of:

  • Design of experimental hardware and campaign planning
  • Data capture, analysis and processing
  • Verification and Validation of theoretical models and software codes
  • Running pre- and post-experiment calculations to predict and model experiment response
  • Contributing to interactions with international partners and internal customers
  • Coding, scripting and improvement of modelling and simulation workflow

An ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong degree in Physics or Maths, or equivalent experience.
  • A specialism in one or more of the following areas: electromagnetism, radiation transport, Monte Carlo modelling.
  • Code development and scientific programming experience using languages such as C++, Python, C, Fortran.
  • Experience in experimental techniques.
  • Experience with high-performance computing platforms.
  • A methodical approach in undertaking technical research and conducting technical assessments to draw sound scientific conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and through technical reports.
  • Ability to interpret, analyse and present data in a coherent and engaging manner.
  • Knowledge of the UK deterrent and experience of the wider system and its operational use.

All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and to work in designated areas of site.
