The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Procurement and Support Organisations require safety professionals to support our activities in delivering military capability & providing operational support to platforms, systems and equipment’s.

The MoD organisations of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) have priority vacancies for Safety Professionals across all platforms, within the areas of Land, Maritime and Air.
This is an opportunity to join one of our integrated teams of highly skilled professionals, where you will help ensure the platforms, systems and equipment we deliver to the UK military front-line is safe to use and with minimal environmental impact.

You could be working in a team that either procures, supports or enhances a wide range of military platforms, systems and equipment.
Our Safety Professionals provide advice, support and guidance that influences platform, system and equipment design, policy and strategy, monitors and enhances performance and ensure we are delivering and supporting military capability through life.

Your role may include interacting with internal and external parties, advising customers on engineering design and development, and through-life management of safety and environmental risk. This is key to providing safe, suitable and sustainable platforms, systems, equipment and services for the UK Military Front Line Commands.

The MoD organisations (DE&S and SDA) are keen to support you in achieving practitioner status as a safety professional, and in continuing your professional development in the Safety sector.

Please note that although this campaign has a non-reserved status, some of the roles may require candidates to be Sole UK Nationals.

Should you be successful you could be working in:

Air domain
The Air Domain covers three parts of the Business: Combat Air (Fast Jets such as Typhoon and the new F35 Lightning, Remotely Piloted Air Systems and Training Aircraft including the world famous ‘Red Arrows’); Air Support (our large transport Aircraft, ISTAR assets, Voyager Air-to-Air refuelling capability, Aircraft Simulators, Airfield and Airborne Equipment; everything from aircrew clothing to parachutes and ejector seats!); Helicopters (operated in the Land and Maritime environments).

Maritime domain.
Within Ships, our projects span the simple, to the highly complex, from initial concepts, through to manufacture, support in-service and responsible disposal. Our Ships are highly capable, nimble and full of offensive punch! Successful candidates can expect to be assigned to a specific platform Class, for example, our Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft carriers, Type 45 Destroyers or Mine Countermeasure vessels, or to a portfolio of equipment or systems, for example our Maritime Electronic Warfare programme or other Maritime Combat Systems team. Working within a team of Engineers, your safety role will help ensure that the sailors on board these Ships are kept safe while protecting the Nations interests at Sea.

Land domain.
The Land Equipment Operating Centre provides platforms and equipment, including systems and services to the UK Armed Forces which are fit for purpose and can be used safely at the extremes of their capability in an ever-hostile environment. The LE OC equipment portfolio ranges from highly complex vehicles and supporting systems, to commodity and commercially available items and includes both In-Service equipment and future capabilities such as AJAX, Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, Warrior, MLRS, the Protected Mobility vehicles fleet including Mastiff, Jackal, Ridgeback, as well as Soldier Systems including Light Weapons,. The roles being recruited typically require knowledge of safety management systems and supporting risk assessments to aid in the development and review of Safety and Environmental Case Reports, requiring constructive engagement between Portfolios/Delivery Teams, Engineering Subject Matter Experts, Front Line Commands, external suppliers and Regulators at all stages in the acquisition cycle.

Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA)
Within the SDA, we take great pride in procuring, delivering and supporting some of the most exciting and complex platforms and equipment ever built for the Armed Services – nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. Successful candidates will be appointed to work within a specific platform area such as our new Dreadnought or attack submarine programmes, in-service operational platforms, or work within a specific supporting system/equipment delivery team. 

Responsibilities 

Responsibilities involved in these roles include, but are not limited to:

To contribute to the development and maintenance of Policy and Process in order to satisfy the DE&S / SDA corporate standards for delivering and supporting Safety Management.

To support the development and management of Safety Management Systems at Project level.

Providing specialist advice on product safety and systems safety matters to relevant stakeholders ensuring the safety considerations are correctly considered, defined and implemented.

Using your knowledge and experience of key Safety information to develop and create bodies of evidence for Safety cases.

To work with colleagues at all levels to ensure compliance with relevant UK and EU legislation and regulations, MOD regulations and DE&S /SDA Policy.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Level 4 Qualification in either an Engineering or Science discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience and knowledge.
• Demonstrable experience of having managed stakeholders in order to deliver a technical outcome in High Hazard industry such as, Petrochemical Marine, Aero, Automotive, Nuclear.
• Demonstrable knowledge / experience of Safety Artefacts (Risk Assessments, safety and environmental case reports / Hazard logs)

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Holds or working towards Practitioner status in Systems safety or / and Environmental Practices.
• Professional registered status or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
• Member of a relevant Professional Safety and/ or Environmental Body.
