Principal Engineer - Electrical and Electronic Capability Development

Would you like to play a pivotal role supporting engineering projects across multiple Royal Navy submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Domain Cluster Support (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) at our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Filton and Frimley.

As a Principal Engineer you will be involved with Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams across various programmes. You will work closely with the delivery teams to understand their challenges around people, process, toolsets, technology, information management and specialist facilities. You will solve problems, create and deliver on action plans. Interface with Engineering Function Capability teams to ensure timely input to integrated business plans via the Domain Lead. Report status of delivery of such a plan and enable onward reporting to Submarines, Maritime and Corporate functional reviews, to ensure the engineering capability within your disciplines are fit to deliver today and in the future.

This role will provide you with considerable autonomy as you define how best to perform support your delivery teams. You will help to determine the direction for this discipline for the whole business unit, across all programmes current and future. It will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in capability management and will provide a good stepping stone into engineering leadership/project management roles in the future. You will quickly find yourself interacting with senior stakeholders on a regular basis, as well as having the opportunity to influence change

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Domain Cluster Support (Electrical and Electronic Engineering)

Understanding the multiple programme demands for resource, identifying prioritisation decisions required to meet the programmes needs and the career development of individuals

Ensuring the continued technical and professional development of Electrical and Electronic engineers

Managing the Professional Institution relationships in conjunction with the People Capability Team

Chairing meetings and workshops to develop, improve and sustain processes

Supporting delivery of governance (compliance) against business processes

Supporting development and maintenance of a plan for specialist toolsets, to ensure are fit for purpose and as efficient as they can be

Working with the Engineering Managers and stakeholders to establish a technology development plan for Electrical and Electronic engineers

Supporting the transformation of the Engineering Function, developing the services we provide to the delivery teams

Interfacing with other business functions (HR, Security, Site etc.) in support of your delivery teams

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Degree qualified within an appropriate engineering domain (or equivalent qualification or experience), such as: electronic engineering, mechatronics or related discipline

Appreciation and generalist understanding of one or more of of the following sub-disciplines: Control and Instrumentation, Communications Systems, Power Systems, Electrical Systems Modelling

Engineering systems design

Desirable:

Project leadership/capability management experience

Experience in Capability Management

Chartered or working towards
