Senior Project Engineer

Would you like to play a key role delivering engineering support to operational Warship support projects? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Project Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the Project Engineering Manager (PEM) to ensure that the engineering service delivered to Warships in Portsmouth Naval Base and globally is safe and delivers a functional engineering product.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, supporting the development and delivery of the engineering programme of work for all warships in Portsmouth. You will be working with a variety of stakeholders delivering engineering decisions at the waterfront, ensuring ships get back to sea on time and with the correct level of integrity.

There will also be significant opportunities for further development within this role including support in planning the next steps in your career enroute to future Engineering Leadership roles.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Project Engineer will involve:

During project delivery, resolve production queries as quickly as practicable within safety / design intent. This includes carrying out engineering calculations, investigate and resolve engineering and maintenance support issues, and to support Ops, COMs and Project Management functions in the delivery of ship projects or programmes

Making engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and PEMs delegated authority (within Design Intent)

During project planning, review all work in conjunction with ship's staff, COM and Ops to ensure that it contains sufficient engineering content, appropriate levels of acceptance and assurance and that product safety / quality considerations have been incorporated into the Project Haz ID / Quality Scope

Supporting the PEM in maintaining engineering oversight, providing engineering governance, assurance and facilitating Warship Support to ensure overall quality and integrity of production work in addition to formal quality related events

Being responsible for the line management of Project Engineers within their respective Engineering Support teams

Supporting the Project Engineer Management Team in driving Continuous Improvement across Warship Support including: Technology & Innovation, Productivity and Right First-Time interventions

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Relevant engineering degree (or equivalent experience/qualification) held

Knowledge and experience of design support activities with ability to conduct engineering calculations, technical investigation and report writing in support of tasking requirements

A broad knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Constructive, and Electronic Systems within a maritime environment or an adjacent market which may include:

Propulsion and steering systems
Hydraulics
Water production and treatment
Refrigeration and air conditioning
Electrical generation and distribution
Navigation and communication electronics

Deck equipment including cranes and winching gear

Aviation support systems
Door, hatches and windows
Combat and mission systems

Either a Chartered Engineer or actively working towards gaining Chartered Engineer Registration

Desirable:

Experience in an Engineering position supporting complex engineering projects

Experience of repair, maintenance and integration of ships systems and equipment

Experience of the development of ships, and the procurement of marine systems, equipment and materials

Master's degree is an advantage

Full driving licence held

Willing to travel abroad
