Overall Department Direction
Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.
The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, with ongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK. We are recruiting staff in all disciplines, to join us at Bristol, Devonport or Rosyth with flexible working arrangements and UK travel to meet project requirements.
Main Purpose of Role
The role is within our current shipbuilding programme, with other shipbuilding and refit opportunities in the pipeline. The role is for a Naval Architect with stability expertise, which will require:
1. Management of the Naval Architecture team, leading the technical development of the design and resolving technical issues, as well as ensuring delivery of outputs in accordance with the project plan
2. To act as the Delegated Design Authority for Naval Architecture, responsible for design configuration control, as well as the review and approval of the design baseline and any subsequent design changes and concessions.
3. Responsible for oversight and management of the Naval Architecture (Stability, Weight, Resistance and Propulsion and Seakeeping), Survivability and Arrangement teams. Responsible as Design Authority in all instances, supported by SQEP team members.
4. Demonstrable experience of management of new build Naval Authority Key Hazard Certification ideally in Escape, Evacuation and Rescue and Stability
5. Deep technical knowledge of Naval Architecture, including: Wholeship and compartment arrangement, stability, weight, resistance and propulsion and Seakeeping, Survivability, Escape and Evacuation and Aviation facilities.
6. Significant experience of ship design to meet classification requirements, ideally to LR Naval Ship and UK Naval Authority Rules.
7. Ability to manage stakeholders and achieve acceptance off contract for Naval Architecture scope.
8. Direct Experience of Naval New Build Programmes, ANEP 77, DSTAN 02-900, MAP 01-024, NAG Stability Certification
In addition you will belong to the overall E&M Naval Architecture group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
The Principal Engineer is an experienced engineer working as a subject matter expert in a specialist subject area. Understands concepts and principles, shapes the design development and determines a solution. Personally undertakes the most complex work within the subject area and provides help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.
Qualifications
• Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered;
• A member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA) and hold chartered status;
• UK Security cleared or able to achieve UK SC clearance
