Product Safety and Environmental Manager

Would you like to play a key role supporting the safety of systems within Royal Naval Ships? We currently have a vacancy for a Product Safety and Environmental Manager at our site in either New Malden, Frimley, Filton or Portsmouth.

Our Combat Systems form the "brains" of complex warships, and are involved in the design, development, integration and provision of support that enable navies to protect nations. We provide a range of combat system products and services that support ships throughout their lives, working with our customers to ensure they can respond to ever-evolving maritime threats.

As a Product Safety and Environmental Manager, you will be the delegated authority for ensuring the safety of all equipment within Combat Systems and will manage a talented team of Product Safety and Product Environmental Engineers, providing both physical and functional safety expertise as well as product environmental expertise to specified projects.

This role will provide you with a unique opportunity to work across a wide variety of products, working with cutting edge technology with excellent career progression opportunities and you will be fully supported in your development within BAE Systems.

Your main responsibilities as a Product Safety and Environmental Manager will involve:

Managing the Product Safety and Environmental team across multiple sites, covering over 95 projects and programmes

Ensuring the quality and timely delivery of Product Safety & Environmental artefacts to meet the Combat System Portfolio project needs

Developing and maintaining team capability including training, resource and capability planning to deliver Product Safety and Environmental services to the business

Recommending and advising on achieved levels of safety for Combat System Portfolio products to the Chief Engineer

Ensuring the articulation and completeness of safety arguments for Combat System Portfolio projects and programmes

Reporting monthly into the Combat Systems Leadership Team regarding any issues and progress

Your skills and qualifications as a Product Safety and Environmental Manager:


Degree or equivalent qualification and experience in a STEM subject.

Chartered membership of a relevant professional institute.

Have a strong knowledge of, and experience in, Product Safety and product environmental process and system implementation.

Experience working with the functional interaction of complex systems such as defence, aerospace, nuclear, automotive, air traffic management, etc.

Knowledge and understanding of legislation, standards, processes and tools used in safety & environmental engineering

Demonstrable experience in leading a technical product safety/environment team


Understanding of Environmental Safety (the REACH system of control, etc.) and how this affects the engineering life cycle

Recognised safety professional in a relevant domain e.g. SaRS - The Safety and Reliability Society

Understanding of safety & environmental management from all aspects of engineering including, but not limited to, human factors, security, etc. for a naval platform design within a system of systems environment

You will have excellent communication skills with an ability to engage, manage and influence a broad range of stakeholders. You will have the ability to lead, will be collaborative in your approach in order to build positive, effective and trusted relationships within a multi-disciplinary environment. You will also be confident in challenging and influencing when required.

Location: New Malden, Frimley, Filton (Bristol) or Broad Oak (Portsmouth)
