Ensuring essential industries can operate efficiently and safely

At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. We are the independent regulator for occupational health and safety in Great Britain, and our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, provide specialist products and services, and produce crucial research and statistics.

The role

From major petro-chemical processing plants to woodworking businesses, the sectors we regulate in the Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division are essential to the country’s economy and social infrastructure, but they often involve hazardous substances and processes. You will use your technical knowledge and expertise to regulate onshore major hazard premises and installations.  Your influence will be important in ensuring not only individual employers but whole sectors improve health and safety standards. When incidents do occur, you will carry out forensic analysis of process safety.

Your background

With a background in the chemical or downstream oil industry you’ll be well-versed in controlling risks. This will include a sound understanding of the design and operation of chemical process plants and the safe storage and handling of hazardous chemicals. Your well-developed communication skills mean you’re ready to challenge and influence at all levels. You’ll have a recognised qualification in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, and hold or be qualified to study for Chartered Membership or Chartered Fellowship of the Institution of Chemical Engineers or the Royal Society of Chemistry. You must hold a full UK driving licence.

Rewards

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.

Our work affects people’s lives across the UK, and it’s important that our teams reflect the diversity of the society we work to protect. So we look for people to bring different skills, perspectives and experience from all walks of life, and particularly welcome BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants, currently underrepresented in this discipline within HSE.

Please submit your CV, with a suitability statement of up to 500 words, outlining relevant experience and explaining how you meet the requirements of the role.

Company

Regardless of your role, being part of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) gives you a real opportunity to help Great Britain work well. We protect lives and livelihoods and also help employers innovate, be productive and grow. Our people do some of the most important work in the Civil Service, supporting the government.

As the national occupational health and safety regulator, we offer a range of rewarding career opportunities. We employ scientists, engineers, health experts, and IT and digital professionals as well as inspectors and many other roles. We invest in our people because together we can help more people come home safe and well from their jobs.
