System Design Authority - Combat Systems

We have opportunities for a number of experienced individuals to join us in a System Design Authority role to help shape the future of Naval Combat Systems to be based at our sites in either New Malden, Dorchester, Frimley or Portsmouth (Broad Oak).

As a System Design Authority (SDA) - Combat Systems, you will undertake a range of Combat Management System equipment related engineering activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements under the direction of the Senior SDA. Product areas include Gunnery and Electro-Optical Systems, METOC and infrastructure systems. The scope of the role will be interesting and varied and will involve working across a range of naval platforms including the new Type 26 Frigates and the recently commissioned QEC Class aircraft carriers.

We are looking for highly experienced systems engineers - people who have worked on complex products and have a proven track record of leading on complex design solutions with responsibility for their technical integrity. You may have a varied background with exposure to hardware, software development, system acceptances, delivery and handover to a customer. This is a unique opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills on our products and to become the Design Authority for one or for a range of subjects.

Your main responsibilities as a System Design Authority - Combat Systems will involve:

Preparing specifications, developing designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carrying out design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained

Conducting complex technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and preparing reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability

Acting as a lead point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve complex problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives

Supporting the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in area(s) of expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids

Supporting Product Design Certification activities including Product Safety & Environmental matters

Providing technical direction to the wider teams

Your skills and qualifications as a System Design Authority - Combat Systems:

Essential:

Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in STEM subject

Extensive experience in the design, build, and integration of "system of systems"

Possess in-depth knowledge in a number of the following systems engineering disciplines:

  • System Acceptance Management
  • Configuration Management
  • Human Factors
  • Interface Analysis
  • Performance Analysis
  • Requirements Analysis
  • System Design
  • Testing Improvements
  • Trials & Integration Support

Ability to operate in a large, complex multi-project environment

Desirable:

Knowledge of the requirements for Product Safety & Environmental matters

Knowledge and understanding of a Design Certification process

Experience in reviewing bids and programmes at various stages of the life cycle

Whether you have experience in a defence or MOD environment or have a background in IT, you will already be an expert in your particular field, willing to explore and learn about our unique Combat Systems. You will have excellent communication skills with an ability to work with and present technical information to key internal and external stakeholders. You will be self-motivated and will enjoy problems solving and getting into the detail.
