The Opportunity

Sparkworks is the part of future systems that develops disruptive capabilities. Its current focus is; RF Directed Energy Weapons (RF DEW), Laser Directed Energy Weapons (LDEW), Low Observability (LO) and Emerging Technologies. Its aim is to mature concepts using new and unusual tech, deliver prototypes, demonstrations and trials, ultimately delivering step changes in capability to the UK and friendly nations. An opportunity exists for a Safety specialist who can employ their ability to see the bigger picture whilst understanding the detail to many and varied challenges at all stages of the CADMID cycle.
 
What are we looking for?

We seek a systems engineer with the following attributes:
  • Knowledge of relevant safety and security standards (such as DefStan 00-56) and safety assessment methodologies
  • Understanding of the ALARP principle and its application to safety assessment
  • Good analytical and methodical thinking to ensure completeness and consistency in safety and security analysis work
  • Experience in the use of Rhapsody, DOORs, and the IBM Rational Toolset, including configuration management structures and approaches.
  • Excellent stakeholder management
  • Excellent presentation and communications skills, particularly for presenting complex technical arguments or analysis simply and succinctly.  Communicating key points to broad groups of stakeholders.
  • Ideally have an understanding of Laser hazards and the potential risk and accidents associated with operation of any laser system, but specifically High Power LDEW.
  • A technical and practical way of thinking, possibly with a physics background, coupled with system design experience and an ability to see how things fit together
  • Creativity, imagination & problem solving skills
  • Adaptability & willingness to deal with fluidity in fast paced environments
  • Attention to detail
  • Record of successful technical work delivered individually and/or as part of a team
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and often from a blank sheet of paper
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, backed by working knowledge of Office software
  • Ability to step back from day to day aspects, view the bigger picture context and navigate a successful course through complex and changing requirements

The Role

This role is to lead all LDEW system and trial safety solution definition and analysis activities, and manage the generation of the overarching safety case documentation, engage with the relevant stakeholder and accreditation bodies, and address any issues that arise. This role will also be responsible for managing the system security analysis with support of the InfoSec and Cyber team, and delivering implementation of appropriate security measures based on a risk balanced approach.
