Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems Design

Would you like to be involved in working on the conceptual designs for bids and future strategies for Naval Warships? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems Design at our site in either Portsmouth or Filton as part of our Future Projects team.

As a Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems Design, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of specific electrical engineering work packages associated with both the platform electrical system architecture and sub-system design aspects on a designated project (including T26), ensuring the electrical tasks undertaken are fully integrated and consistent with the wider platform electrical solution.

This role will provide you with the unique opportunity to work within an expanding, highly skilled multi-disciplinary team on some of the most cutting-edge defence technology. Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems Design will involve:

Designing and developing solutions, resolving engineering issues and problems for a range of situations relating to the electrical elements

Responsible Engineer for the conceptual and detail designs of the ship wide HV and LV Distribution Systems and the equipment within, liaising with other Engineering stages/disciplines as well as the Customer/ Suppliers where required

Managing the ship wide HV and LV distribution system including design calculations, drawings and supporting design documentation

Developing designs and preparing design documentation in line with specifications and technical standards, checking own work as well as that of other Engineers/Senior Engineers

Supervising undergraduates or junior staff members assigned for training to assist in the development of their knowledge and skills

Working within the framework of the engineering life cycle and undertaking technical reviews, verifying and signing off engineering designs

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems Design:

Essential:

Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)

Experience of engineering system design for power/propulsion systems - HV/LV

Background in relevant engineering environment or industry such as Utilities, Renewables, Royal Navy, Power generation or Defence

Desirable:

Experience in system modelling and analysis

Chartered Engineer status or willingness to achieve

Background in Marine/Maritime engineering

You will be self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised and meet tight deadlines. At the same time, you will have excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with the wider team when required, managing both internal and external stakeholders and keen to train and mentor others. The ability to proactively problem-solve is key to the success of this role.
