Marine Surveyor

Engineer, Naval Architect, Nautical and Ship disciplines

S Level

£43,038 plus starting allowance of £3,500 which will increase after initial training

At The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), we are committed to enhancing maritime safety. Upholding our vision of ‘safer lives, safer ships and cleaner seas’, our remit covers both the UK and abroad, and we work collaboratively as a forward-thinking team to deliver our ambitious goals. Our work is both challenging and rewarding, meaning that our Marine Surveyors have access to the most stimulating projects.

We currently have opportunities for dynamic Maritime Professionals to join our Engineer, Naval Architect, Nautical and Ship disciplines. With plenty of variety in every day, you will inspect, audit and survey ships and maritime ship operators to ensure the highest UK, EU and international standards are being met. Surveying everything from fishing vessels to cargo ships, these standards will be in relation to safety, management, welfare, security and anti-pollution regulations. Through comprehensive training, you will learn how to approve stability information, and you will investigate complaints. If you join us in the Nautical or Engineer disciplines, once qualified as a Nautical or Engineer Examiner, you will be entrusted with conducting oral examinations to ensure that seafarers are competent and trained to the appropriate levels.

This is an exciting opportunity to put your career on a dynamic trajectory. You will therefore excel with us if you are a resilient and enthusiastic individual who can balance the needs of multiple priorities. With a full UK driving license and a passport, you will have the flexibility to travel according to the needs of the role, with UK visits and short-term visits overseas and offshore.

Crucially, you will bring exceptional communication and influencing skills to the role, and you will enjoy delivering excellent customer service. You will also have the confidence to build relationships with stakeholders, and you will be able to make effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.

With significant managerial or technical experience on board a ship or in the marine industry, you will also hold the following qualifications:

  • Engineer discipline: MCA Recognised STCW III/2 Chief Engineer unlimited Certificate of Competency.
  • Nautical discipline: MCA Recognised STCW II/2 Master unlimited Certificate of Competency.
  • Ship discipline: An engineering degree accredited by IMarEST / IMechE as meeting the academic qualifications for Chartered Engineer or you will be a Chartered Engineer with relevant marine experience.
  • Naval Architect discipline: A degree accredited by RINA/SNAME as meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer or you will be a Chartered Engineer with relevant marine experience.

Join us, and take a central role in protecting people at sea and the maritime environment. With the most exceptional training and development opportunities, we will fully develop your skills in this interesting field, and you will have the support of experienced colleagues to ensure you are reaching your full potential. We will also provide you with a competitive benefits package and flexible working arrangements, and we will see to it that you are achieving a great work/life balance.

We are focussed on being the best maritime safety organisation in the world. Join us in our exciting work, and help us as we maintain our fight against pollution and keep seafarers safe.

Closing date: 8 February 2021.
