Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture (Weights)
Following successful bids in the international market, BAE Systems is now supporting the Canadian Navy in the design of the latest frigates and we currently have a vacancy for an Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture (Weights) at our site in either Scotstoun/Filton/Portsmouth.
As an Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture (Weights), you will be responsible for the development of engineering design and production output data for weights for this programme. This includes overall management responsibility for a large Weights engineering team, interfacing with multiple customers and suppliers to ensure delivery is within cost, schedule and quality targets.
This role will provide you a unique opportunity to join our growing Naval Ships engineering business working with cutting edge technology and helping to integrate world class combat and platform systems on one of the largest international projects in the UK defence market right now.
Your main responsibilities as an Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture (Weights) will involve:
Acting as the Subject Matter Expert within the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) Delivery Team for Weights, remaining up to date with legislation, class rules and design changes across the Global Combat Ship Programme that will affect the design or contracted deliverables
Conducting complex weight related technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and preparing reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems
Developing designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards and carrying out design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained
Accountable to the Engineering Manager Naval Architecture for the Weights Control Account Plan (£m), including monitoring schedule and reporting variances
Managing resourcing within the team, including progression and development of engineers, organising training as required and addressing performance issues, ensuring correct levels of Suitably Qualified Experienced Person (SQEP) and capability in the team
Producing reports, calculations and contractual deliverables associated with Weights engineering area. This also includes design reviews and assuring BAE compliance with appropriate governance including weight management policies in close liaison with the Technical Authority
Carrying out team planning, risk management and ensuring quality across all scopes of work
Your skills and qualifications as an Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture (Weights):
Essential:
Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Naval Architecture/Ship Science// Marine Engineering or a relevant Mechanical or Engineering subject
Experience managing or leading a team
Experience working within a multi-disciplinary design environment on a major construction engineering project
Experience managing weights/margins and understanding the impact of weights on the design solution ideally within a maritime/marine environment
Desirable:
Chartership or willingness to achieve
Knowledge and understanding of Warship design
Experienced in Life Cycle Management reviews of bids and programmes
Extensive knowledge of Project Management techniques (EV, CPI, SPI, Risk etc.)
