Head of Systems & Governance

Would you like to play a critical role in the oversight of systems engineering excellence and governance within our Maritime Services division? We currently have a vacancy for Head of Systems & Governance at our site in Broad Oak.

As Head of Systems & Governance, you will be reporting to the Product & Training Services (P&TS) Head of Engineering, responsible for the integrity and safety of all engineering activities delivered within P&TS.

Our Product & Training Services (P&TS) business is responsible for the delivery and support for Torpedoes, Radars, Manufacturing, Boats & Autonomy, and Training Services & Technology. In developing, manufacturing and supporting products and services for our UK and international customers P&TS further aligns with the wider Maritime strategy to establish end to end support solutions, whilst developing growth opportunities across the portfolio.

You will also be the Discipline Lead for Systems Engineering, ensuring that overall engineering governance across P&TS is maintained and that sectors follow Lifecycle Management (LCM) mandates. You will ensure that all products and services are fit for purpose and meet legal, regulatory, contractual, environmental, safety and technical requirements.

The diversity and complexity of the many different products and services in the electronic, land and marine environments make this an exciting engineering role. In addition, the continual drive towards functional excellence and the growth agenda for the PT&S business ensures a rewarding career path.

Career opportunities will exist as part of the succession plans within P&TS engineering as well as posing wider opportunities within the BAE Systems UK and Global businesses.

Your main responsibilities as Head of Systems & Governance will involve:

Global engineering oversight, decision ratification, control of safety processes and continuous improvement within the P&TS business

Ensuring engineering excellence and implementing engineering governance including process improvement and adherence to regulatory regimes and statutory laws

Deputising for the P&TS Head of Engineering

Holding the role of Discipline Lead for the Systems Engineering function consisting of 80 to 100 professional systems engineers and technical authorities; this will include delivery of engineering capability covering processes, tools and SQEP of our personnel

Chairing and running design review meetings and technical bid reviews on projects valued at up to £50 million

Discipline lead for systems engineering - ensuring we have the right people, process, tools, and ensuring everyone is up to SQEP.

Maintaining regular contact with heads of engineering, sector heads and engineering managers

Sponsorship of engineers for Chartered status

Liaison with schools and universities

Implementation of the BAE Systems LCM framework

Your skills and qualifications as Head of Systems & Governance:

Essential:

Demonstrable experience within engineering management, including functional and delivery management

Proven track record working within a complex engineering environment (such as defence, maritime, aerospace, automotive, oil & gas etc.)

A degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject (such as engineering or STEM discipline)

Membership of an approved engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer

Desirable:

Fellowship of an approved engineering institution

What we're looking for in you:

You will have the ability to make logical decisions of significant business impact based on sound evidence and analysis. You will also have the ability to argue a business case or maintain a sound regulatory position in the face of possible conflicting interests.

You must possess excellent communication skills to be able to establish effective collaboration and trust with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, as well as the ability to influence the direct actions of others, at all levels in the organisation.

Location: Broad Oak, Portsmouth

Salary: Competitive

Benefits: Our employees receive an excellent benefits package which includes a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. We recognise that an inclusive and diverse workplace - where all employees feel respected, valued and able to achieve their full potential - is vitally important.

We welcome applications from all suitably qualified people.

Please be aware that many roles working for BAE Systems will be subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors including your nationality, any previous nationalities you have held, and/or your place of birth may limit those roles that you can perform for the organisation.
