About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We are trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we are driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and engineering.

Technology Department provides technology, engineering and support to STFC’s current and future facilities and programmes. The Department has 325 technical and scientific staff acting as a single department across three sites at the Daresbury Laboratory, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and UKATC. Working at the forefront of scientific endeavour is only possible with dedicated teams of engineers that are capable of turning scientific objectives into reality.

The Control Systems and Safety Interlocks Group is part of the Technology Department and is based at Daresbury Laboratory. We are responsible for the design, development and support of advanced control systems for a wide range of scientific facilities within STFC as well as being involved in collaborative development projects with industry and international organisations.

About the Role

We are looking to appoint an experienced embedded systems engineer with a background in FPGA-based systems to become involved in the design, development and support of advanced distributed control systems for particle accelerators and other large scale scientific facilities.

You will be expected to develop and support systems in a number of areas including:

  • Digitisation of particle beam and laser beam diagnostics systems (e.g. beam position, beam charge, laser energy)
  • Fibre optic distribution of timing and synchronisation data for correlation of data across geographically separated systems
  • Digital signal processing and real-time analysis of data signals
  • Modifying commercial instrumentation systems for integration with facility sub-systems and to provide specialist custom functionality
  • You will work closely with engineers and scientists from other groups and departments to design and implement embedded systems across multiple projects and facilities.

About You

You will bring proven experience of delivering complex FPGA-based solutions implemented using your skills in VHDL (or Verilog). You must also have experience of specifying, designing and developing software for embedded systems. You should be familiar with the concepts of real-time processing.

You should have good problem-solving skills and be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of scientific and engineering principles outside of your specialist field.

You will be able to work equally well on your own or as part of a team and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with working within a quality management system and a good understanding of the principles of project management are desirable.
