Safety Engineer

Would you like to play a key role in the delivery of product safety activities for nuclear submarines? We currently have a number of opportunities Safety Engineers at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Safety Engineer, you will be working within the Whole Boat Product Safety Department, working closely with the Lead Engineer for your section. There are a number of teams covering Function and System-level analysis and justification within the Whole Boat Product Safety Department, and this role will be in those areas relating to the platform product safety of the submarine.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to be part of an exciting, dynamic team that is responsible for developing a Product Safety Case for one of the largest and most complex products that is being manufactured in the UK at the present time. Future career development could include progression into a Principal Safety Engineer role, as well as support towards obtaining Chartered status.

Your main responsibilities as a Safety Engineer will involve:

Identifying system and functional hazards using techniques such as: HAZOP, SWIFT, Functional Hazard Assessments etc.

Undertaking system and functional complex analysis using analysis techniques such as: Fault Tree and Event Tree Analysis

Production of Functional Level safety justifications

Reviewing System Level safety justifications to support the Functional Level safety justification

Providing guidance on all aspects of Product Safety to Engineers within the function

Liaison on all aspects of the Product Safety case with an intelligent customer and equipment suppliers

Attending and contributing to Design Reviews

Your skills and qualifications as a Safety Engineer:

Preferably Degree qualified in relevant STEM discipline, but lower qualification with relevant product/functional safety experience will be considered

Previous exposure to/ knowledge of safety techniques, such as: Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA), Accident Sequence Modelling, Fault Schedules, Hazard & Operability Analysis (HAZOP), Zonal Hazard Analysis (ZHA)
