Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering

Are you a Systems Engineer looking for a unique innovative role? We currently have pivotal Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering opportunities available, integrating technologies to provide our military services with competitive advantage.

As a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering you will have the opportunity to work on one of a variety of our programmes, helping us to design, develop, integrate, manage and support systems for in-service/future submarines. You will have a good understanding of the inputs, flow of decisions and dependencies that will impact system design as well as product delivery.

As we move towards a model-based approach to Engineering, our Systems Engineers will continue to develop a wide-range of skills and experience across all areas and disciplines and we are able to offer real opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that the professional capability of the business and individual are maintained and improved.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering will involve:

Understanding our customers' challenging needs and developing, validating and managing requirements

Developing complex system architectures and sub-systems and providing evidence of fitness for purpose

Integrating systems containing electronic, mechanical and software sub-systems, understanding the potential impact on the whole boat and interfacing systems

Verifying that customer needs are satisfied through qualification and test activities

Taking accountability for technical work packages

Providing guidance and coaching to other engineers

Steering new systems development through implementation of best practice systems lifecycle processes

Working with customers to support delivered systems and resolve issues

Essential skills and qualifications:

Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science)

Demonstrable knowledge of the system engineering lifecycle with ability to apply good systems engineering practices to your work

Understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations

  • Demonstrable competence in some of the following:
  • Requirements Engineering, DOORS
  • Defining architectures (e.g. MoDAF, TOGAF)
  • Defining and managing interfaces between systems
  • System integration and testing, including acceptance activities

You will be self-motivated and a proactive individual, able to analyse complex problems and work autonomously and in a structured manner. You will have excellent communications skills with an ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders and will be capable of supervising others.

Maritime - Submarines

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.

Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
