At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. As an independent regulator, our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, and produce crucial research and statistics. We also develop specialist learning and development programmes.
The role
The main focus here will be on addressing potential major accident hazards in relation to process plant on offshore installations. Using your proven specialist knowledge, you’ll carry out the full range of duties of a HSE Specialist Inspector, including:
- Providing expert advice on process engineering health and safety matters to colleagues, industry and other stakeholders
- Carrying out topic assessments of offshore installation safety cases
- Carrying out topic inspections of offshore oil and gas installations across the UKCS
- Investigating dangerous occurrences (including hydrocarbon releases) on offshore oil and gas installations across the UKCS
We’ll also rely on you to support enforcement action, including preparing specialist reports and providing expert evidence in legal proceedings to make technical contributions to the development of industry standards and guidance.
Your background
Proven experience relating to the design and operation of process plant, including applying the principles of process safety management, is key. This could possibly be demonstrated by achievement of IChemE’s Professional Process Safety Engineer status. You’ll also need a good understanding of the relevant engineering codes and standards and be able to satisfy the UK offshore medical & survival training requirements.
Strong analytical skills, lots of initiative and the ability to make sound decisions are vital too. Well-organised, comfortable working alone or as part of a multi-disciplinary team and adept at writing effective technical reports, you should also be willing to travel by helicopter and stay offshore for several days.
Rewards
There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.
Our work affects people’s lives across the UK, and it’s important that our teams reflect the diversity of the society we work to protect. So we look for people to bring different skills, perspectives and experience from all walks of life, and particularly welcome BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants, currently underrepresented in this discipline within HSE.
