Senior Project Engineer

Would you like to play a key role within the Boats Design team, providing capability across a broad spectrum of projects? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Project Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be overseeing post design projects on small craft, ensuring project requirements are completed; to scope, budget, time and ensuring customer vessels have full operational capability.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a varied role with numerous engineering projects, ensuring a diverse scope of work, ideally solidifying your knowledge base for wider opportunities within BAE.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Project Engineer will involve:

Leading minor engineering projects from requirements definition through to delivery

Providing sound estimates for engineering work

Writing scopes for engineering design work packages

Collating evidence and present solutions so as to provide assurance to the SDA and other stakeholders

Creating detailed 3D models and 2D drawings, for a wide range of products from small components to whole vessel systems

Producing drawings in accordance with BS8888 Engineering Drawing standards

Carrying out small craft systems and marine engineering design tasks

Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task in order to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients

Your skills and qualifications:

Degree level or HND/HNC with relevant experience within marine engineering/craft design (or equivalent level of experience)

Working towards a chartership or willing to gain

Demonstrable knowledge and ideally, experience in a number of the following:

  • Good knowledge of Small Craft systems design including electrical, fuel, bilge etc.
  • GRP and aluminium design and repair knowledge
  • Marine engineering knowledge
  • Small Craft design standards and processes (IMO, MCA, ISO, DefStan, Classification Rules)
  • Engineering material selection and use, particularly according to British Standards/Euronorms/Classification Society standards and Defence Standards

Knowledge of commercial and/or military small craft

Experience in 3D modelling ideally using Siemens NX, and 2D drafting (Autocad or similar) for production and manufacturing

Marine experience

Desirable:

Experience leading multiple engineering projects

You have excellent communication skills, allowing you to represent BAE systems and communicate technical information effectively, both orally and written, with stakeholders across all levels (both internal and external).

Furthermore, you will be comfortable leading design tasks within your own knowledge area, whilst motivating others.
