Principal Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Would you like to be a leader in our Manufacturing Engineering function? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer Manager at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Principal Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you will be working within our Manufacturing Engineering function, reporting to the Head of Manufacturing Engineering and be responsible for the overall producibility of submarines. The purpose of Manufacturing Engineering is to develop, implement and govern capable methods of manufacture, assembly, disassembly and repair (including method of verification) which can meet customer and business requirements for Safety, Quality, Cost and Delivery throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring compliance to design intent.

You will be responsible for the management and leadership of the Manufacturing Engineering capability for producibility. This role will provide you with the opportunity to define the strategy, standards, processes and methods to ensure the manufacturability of submarines, as well as fundamentally influencing the future of UK submarine design.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Manufacturing Engineering Manager will involve:

Working with the Engineering, Quality, Planning and Operations functions to develop strategies, methods and processes associated with ensuring the 'manufacturability' of the product across the business portfolio

Developing an in-depth understanding of the Submarine build strategy, its general characteristics from a manufacturing and construction process perspective, and to tailor the implementation of the 'design for X' methods that is fit for purpose for BAE Systems submarines specific business needs

Understanding and developing dimensional management approaches that are appropriate for the different stages of the submarines product lifecycle; ranging from concept design through to build and delivery

Developing the 'Producibility' discipline within Manufacturing Engineering; defining processes and policies ensuring that appropriate training is in place for Manufacturing Engineers deployed within the submarines programmes. Undertaking regular process confirmation and audit to demonstrate that a robust and lasting capability has been developed and integrated into the Design and Manufacturing activities at BAE Systems Submarines

Undertaking periodic benchmarking of best practice associated with manufacturability in similar related industries, including shipbuilding, construction, the off-shore petrochemical industries, in addition to maintaining close collaborative relationships with other BAE systems cross sector teams i.e. Land Systems and the Air sector

Through extensive knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (i.a.w ASME, ISO or equivalent), an understanding of variation management and key characteristic controls, act as the overall dimensional management capability lead for Manufacturing Engineering with associated delegations of authority from the Head of Manufacturing Engineering. Act as the technical advisory authority for all dimensional management issues within Manufacturing Engineering, providing detailed coaching and developing the overall capability

Introducing the principles and concepts associated with producibility, which will be as much a cultural change as it is a technical change; leading the transformation programme, engaging with primary stakeholders and educating the business on the need for Dimensional Management

Working in collaboration with the Dimensional Controls team (Quality), to ensure latest metrology equipment, processes and techniques support the Dimensional Management requirements and so that the data output of the metrology system can be readily interpreted, analysed and consumed

Developing processes and standards around the application of APQP standards (i.e. AS9145) in relation to influencing design and securing manufacturing capability to ensure "right first time" delivery

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Manufacturing Engineer Manager:

Essential:

Preferably degree qualified, and working towards/ has achieved Chartership status of an appropriate Institution, coupled with suitable Manufacturing Engineering experience

Comprehensive understanding of a number of Manufacturing Engineering sub-disciplines

Good understanding of how sub-discipline Manufacturing Engineers are organised and governed, and how they are integrated with other disciplines.

Experience in deploying design for assembly/ design for manufacture/ design for "X"

Demonstrable experience of managing dimensional management from one of the following (or similar) environments - aerospace/ship building/large industrial manufacturing facility

The ability to influence at all levels, develop sustainable cross functional relationships and challenge the status quo.

Desirable:

Track record of transformation programmes in a technical discipline
