AWE plays a crucial role in nuclear defence, providing the warheads for the UK's nuclear deterrent. What we do is unique and so are the people who work here. We currently have an exciting leadership opportunity to join us as Head of Operational Excellence. This is a key role required to strengthen our leadership team.

Location: Reading/Basingstoke area

The role of Head of Operational Excellence (OE) is to develop and deliver a strategy for OE across AWE that aligns and delivers to AWE's strategic goals, influencing senior leaders to drive a positive OE culture resulting in improved mission success and workforce engagement.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop the OE vision, strategy for the business in line with the overall business strategy through effective collaboration with a range of senior leaders and ensuring compliance with customer, regulatory and business requirements.
  • Lead and manage the OE team, defining plans and objectives, to support growth of Company-wide OE ways of working, recognition of best practice and sharing of lessons learned.
  • Provide expert knowledge of OE principles, systems and tools to ensure fit for purpose OE at AWE and ensure the business has the skills and capability to sustain the OE ways of working.
  • Drive change in culture and behaviours using OE principles across the business ultimately resulting in improved mission success and workforce engagement.

In addition to the above, we will also be looking for candidates to have:

  • Ability to drive the continuous application and maturation of OE ways of working across the business and continuously challenge existing ways of working to identify and remove waste and improve product delivery.
  • Ability to coach Leaders in the business through observation and feedback to reinforce the OE ways of working and leadership behaviours that drives inclusivity and success.
  • Ability to identify training needs, provision of learning and development solutions to ensure the skills and capability for improvement.
  • Ability to engage with external organisations to ensure the suitability of AWE's strategy and as appropriate use external resources to support its implementation.
