Who are we looking for?

This is a stimulating and challenging role for anyone with High Voltage distribution or High Power electronics experience and with a clear drive for personal growth, organisational learning and continuous improvement. You will also have a collaborative and enabling approach to work as well as the ability to understand complex technical matters from first principles with clear

communication at all levels of an organisation.

The UKAEA facility portfolio includes High Voltage and High Energy systems, both AC and DC with unique requirements relating to Pulse, Surge and Fault condition handling. This role will provide you with the exposure to work on a combination of new and legacy equipment, energy storage and conversion, dynamic switching and protection resilience. Working within the Office of Chief Engineers, you will demonstrate a commitment to engineering safety and innovation and will gain technical exposure across the full UKAEA portfolio and lifecycle including legacy, operational and forward-looking programmes.

What will you be responsible for?

- Providing technical governance, oversight and design approval of Power Infrastructure, Distribution & Generation across the wide and highly varied UKAEA portfolio

- Providing subject matter support to the Engineering Authority (Pulse Power), ensuring the supply and distribution infrastructure is fit for purpose to support UKAEA's Fusion Machines (JET and MAST)

- Design Basis: Providing specialist knowledge of and/or translation between several engineering disciplines to allow acceptance or rejection of plant proposals, modification, exceptional operations, and non-conformances

- Technical Risk Management: Ensuring that the operational envelope of the facility electrical infrastructure is defined with a balance of technical risk between performance, reliability, and lifetime

- Processes & Standards: Applying UKAEA Quality Management System and ways of working. Striving to enshrine accrued knowledge, best industry practice and lessons learned in improved training, processes, and ways of working across UKAEA

- Reviews, Inquiries & Lessons Learned: Leading or taking part in technical incident reviews and inquiries for unexpected plant issues with high technical, programmatic or safety impact.  Utilising such reviews to highlight and share lessons learned throughout the business

Whilst work will be focused at Culham, occasional visits to new facilities at Rotherham and elsewhere may be required, as well as occasional work in controlled HV Areas.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competences required

- Chartered or Incorporated Electrical Eng. with membership of a professional Institution/Institute appropriate to electrical engineering

- Demonstrable experience of delivering high standards with respect to quality, integrity and compliance

- Experience of novel or 'first of a kind' systems, with the ability to work from engineering first principles

- Personal integrity and commitment to engineering safety, innovation and value

- A collaborative, supportive, and enabling mindset, working in such a way as to get the best out of those around you regardless of seniority

- Proven track record in the full lifecycle delivery of HV distribution systems

- Experience in power electronic and / or HR power system analysis and design

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in Electrical, Electronic, Power or Electromagnetic systems

- Post graduate qualification in Energy Storage, power electronics, electromagnetics or system reliability

- Design of High Voltage power systems or power electronics

- Technical Risk Assessment & Management for competing requirements (Reliability, Safety, Performance, Lifetime, etc.)

- Experience operating within a highly regulated environments (Oil & Gas, Chemical, DNO or Power Generation)

- Experience with novel loads, e.g. high power electromagnetics, high power RF generators or pulsed power

- Detailed knowledge of electrical safety, preferably as a senior post-holder responsible for the safety of electrical designs and / or installations, ideally at HV

- Relevant industrial regulations, codes, standards and norms together with tailoring their application within a diverse business
