Job Details
The Port of London Authority (PLA) has a wide range of responsibilities along the tidal Thames. Actively promoting safe use of the river, we strive to safeguard its valuable environment, balancing these requirements with our desire to encourage more commercial activity. From Teddington, past the Thames Barrier and out to sea, we work closely with commercial recreational and amenity groups to maximise the potential of the Thames as a safe and enjoyable waterway for trade, tourism and leisure.
Working within the Marine Engineering Section, the successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking maintenance of machinery and hull systems in a fleet of small commercial craft (up to 36m), shore facilities and piers. In addition to skilled maintenance and machine shop work, boat handling and plant driving, the ME Technician will be required to supervise the work of other technical staff/contractors and serve as relief Ship’s Engineers in the PLA’s Salvage Craft. They will also be expected to impart their knowledge and experience onto junior and trainee staff. Candidates must be self-motivated and capable of undertaking manual lifting operations.
Applicants should have thorough knowledge and experience of the following:
- As a skilled Marine/Industrial Mechanical Engineering Technician, with an HNC in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent demonstrating both theoretical and a number of years practical experience in fault diagnosis, maintenance and operation of the wide range of mechanical, electrical and control systems across the fleet of marine plant.
- Good Toolroom/Fitting skills & experience
- Diesel engine electronic control systems would be an advantage
- Small vessel electrical systems at 12V & 24V dc (including starting & charging and general boat services etc.)
- Safe and effective use of welding/cutting equipment (Gas, Electric, MIG & TIG)
In addition you will:
- Be highly motivated and able to work separately or as part of a team.
- Possess and maintain a clean UK Full Driving Licence (Manual).
- Ideally have small boat handling skills (training can be given)
- Be able to operate Forkliift Trucks etc. (training can be given)
- Be agile, able to climb ladders and to work in small/confined spaces, e.g. small boat engine rooms and tank spaces etc.
Although normal hours of work are 35 per week on a day-work basis, there is a requirement for additional attendance outside this period and on occasion provide call out cover, in response to operational and emergency requirements.
