Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We have an excellent opportunity for a Control & Instrumentation Technician with an Electronics bias to become a member of a team of technicians supporting all hardware related aspects of the CODAS data acquisition and electronic systems. The technician will be expected to be at a level where they able to use their own judgment and adapt existing principles as deemed appropriate. The role can be broadly split into two parts:

- To provide design, installation, commissioning and maintenance support for all CODAS control and data acquisition and electronic systems as well as new enhancement projects

- To provide double shift support of CODAS systems during JET operational phases as well as 24-hour on-call support of critical systems

This is a perfect opportunity to become part of a multi-skilled team of technicians who undertake a wide variety of tasks in support of the JET and MAST experiments. The role brings a lot of variety and no two days are the same. You could be asked to install a cable under a floor one day and the next be involved in a complex fault diagnosis under pressure to help maintain the JET operational program. The role also involves the installation and commissioning of simple and complex data acquisition systems as well as providing support to site-wide network infrastructure.

You will have an appropriate qualification in electrical/electronic engineering, instrumentation, or a related discipline. We are looking for someone with an accommodating and flexible approach to work and with an ability to work under pressure, independently as well as a part of a team.

What will you be responsible for?

Ensuring electronic engineering support as the nominated ESRO (Electronic Subsystem Responsible Officer) for a given project

Installation and commissioning of data acquisition systems

Producing written technical reports and procedural documentation

Testing and repairing of Electronic modules

Providing technical guidance and support to other team members

Working with the Electronics Section engineers supporting new designs and prototypes

Providing rostered double shift support for hardware systems during JET operational campaigns (approximately 1 week in 3)

Provide year-round rostered 24-hour support for critical systems (approximately 1 week in 6)

Resolution of faults on JET to reduce downtime. This requires the ability to react and solve complex problems using own initiative

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competences required

HNC / HND qualification or equivalent in electrical engineering, instrumentation, electronics, or a related discipline

Experience gained as a time served apprentice, or alternative equivalent experience

Ability to work under pressure and make sound engineering decisions

Good analytical skills

Flexibility and strong behavioural safety awareness

Desirable skills, experience and competences

Proven experience of computer-controlled data acquisition, instrumentation and control electronics.

Ability to apply technical expertise to solving problems and adapt to a variety of requirements and tasks.
