Materials and Analytical Scientist (Explosives - Mechanical Properties)

Location: Reading/ Basingstoke area

Working within the Explosives Physical Characterisation (XPC) Team within the Materials and Analytical Sciences (MAS) Sub-Function, you'll primarily be supporting our Mechanical Properties capability, which includes both conducting standard testing, introducing new tests, and developing bespoke tests.

It is desirable that candidates can demonstrate at least a good understanding / experience of the following:

  • Working with hazardous materials

  • Compression, tensile and bend/flexural testing of materials using a universal test machine, i.e. Instron

  • Rheometry, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and intermediate rate testing such as Hopkinson Bar

  • Problem solving and troubleshooting

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities will include:

  • To provide technical knowledge and expertise in the field of materials and chemical science

  • To deliver assigned programmes, projects and processes, to the required scope, timescales, quality and cost

  • Analyse, characterise and assess samples using agreed analytical procedures and processes

  • Identify and rectify problems in analyses and processes, and/or know when to seek assistance where needed in rectifying them

  • Act as a representative in all relevant internal and external interactions

  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player

  • The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs
