The Engineering Installation Group (EIG) sits within the Central Engineering Department providing bespoke installation and maintenance services to all business teams across the Culham site. This is an exciting role and you will be the first point of contact for Welding Operations and welding liaison with the Industrial Site Services (ISS) Contractor Welding Team, providing oversight for their work.

The EIG provides a team of engineers and technicians to oversee and execute specialist maintenance and project installation activities on unique Plasma Heating and Diagnostic plant, sometimes using specialist novel processes, supporting UKAEA Fusion Operations.

What will you be responsible for?

As a Welding Engineer, your duties will include:

- Review and approve weld procedures and associated welder qualifications from the ISS Contractor, and other Contractor organisations on direct contract to UKAEA

- Maintain the records and authorise the use of UKAEA weld procedures. Maintain records of UKAEA welder qualifications

- Oversee the assessment of UKAEA welders in their qualification to specific procedures

- Maintain records of welding undertaken on UKAEA Facilities to the requisite welding quality standards

- Ensuring that Welding Quality Packages, are accurately compiled and completed in a timely manner, for both UKAEA welds and those of the ISS Contractor, or other Contractor directly employed by the UKAEA

- Arranging for Radiography, or other specialist NDT sessions under the relevant contracts when required through the UKAEA Contract Project Manager

- Arranging for UKAEA or Third Party Notified Body inspections, or witnesses, when required

Additional Notes

You will occasionally be expected to work in radioactive areas and at weekends. This role will require the postholder to occasionally work out of normal hours

Qualifications

Essential skills, qualifications, experience and competence required

- Conversant with relevant Welding Codes and Standards: Qualification: notably BS EN 15614, EN 287 and ASME IX Fabrication: notably BS EN 13480, ASME III, VIII, ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.4, B31.8

- Familiarity with the requirements of the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations (PESR) 2016 and the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) 2000

- Degree / HNC in an appropriate Engineering discipline

- Member of The Welding Institute (TWI), Registered European or International Welding Engineer

- Good record keeping – in both electronic and paper media when necessary

- Good communication, numeracy, literacy and stakeholder management skills

- Sound understanding of NDT processes and techniques

- Experience in safe working and supervision

- Capable of working with minimal supervision and guidance

Desirable skills, qualifications, experience and competence

- PCN Certification for some of these NDT processes and techniques

- IOSH Managing Safely qualified
