Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We have an excellent opportunity for a Thermal Hydraulic Analyst working as part of a new team in the Technical Department, exploiting brand new facilities at UKAEA Yorkshire.

As a Thermal Hydraulic Analyst, you will be responsible for taking on a leading role in the development of critical cooling technology that will deliver advances in fusion technology. To be considered, you must possess previous demonstrable experience in computation, validation, and verification of codes for thermal hydraulic analyses. Additionally, you will have specific expertise in modelling complex turbulent flows, two-phase flows, and conjugate heat transfer.

You will be well suited for this role if you approach your work in an analytical way, can communicate effectively, enjoy being innovative and have a passion for solving problems.

What will you be responsible for?

Providing technical expertise in the development and application of computational thermal hydraulics and fluid dynamics, using fluids including single- and two-phase water as well as more novel fluids such as liquid metals and molten salts.

Using relevant analysis tools to analyse and optimise the performance of future nuclear reactors and components in complex and representative environments.

Developing understanding through simulations supported by experimental benchmarking, working with a range of stakeholders across disciplines.

Build and foster links with industrial and academic partners in order to complement our internal capability and to facilitate new project proposals.

Act as an expert point of contact with internal and external groups for application of new thermal hydraulic methods within UKAEA.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

Demonstrated experience in computational thermal hydraulic analysis of nuclear systems

Proven experience in computation, validation, and verification of codes for thermal hydraulic analyses using a range of CFD methods

Specific expertise in modelling complex turbulent flows, two-phase flows, and conjugate heat transfer

Capable of work on assignments in an independent and creative way in a multidisciplinary environment

Excellent communication skills

Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant technical subject

Desirable skills, experience and competence

Familiarity with nuclear fusion technology

Familiarity with applications and techniques for of alternative fluids including liquid metals and molten salts

Additional expertise in any of the following: natural and mixed convection, flow-induced vibration, MHD effects

Postgraduate degree in a relevant technical subject
