Supporting research around COVID-19?
As an Engineer at Diamond you could have a critical role working with leading scientists to tackle some of these big issues.
About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer to join our team, developing state of the art equipment to deliver ground-breaking scientific research.
This role will work on the development of the particle accelerators and photon production systems, which are supporting research in life science including work directly related to COVID-19.
You will play a critical role in working collaboratively with scientists, technicians, and other engineers.
At Diamond we are currently planning a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II, which will generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy. This role will play a significant part in contributing to the upgrade.
This role will be primarily working from home initially, but may include time on site for training, with a view to returning to full time on site over future months as circumstances allow.
About You
Candidates should have substantial experience in the delivery of unique complex scientific equipment including developing specifications, concept designs, taking detailed designs through to manufacture, testing, installation, and commissioning.
Good communication skills are critical, and the ability to discuss ideas, present possible solutions, debate and collaborate at all stages of the projects is essential.
You will have experience in designing systems that operate under challenging conditions such as Ultra High Vacuum, energy absorbing equipment and cryogenic temperatures.
You will display excellent knowledge of engineering drawings and 3D modelling systems and familiar with modern manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing techniques.
You will be confident in doing design risk assessments and understand the requirements of such directives as the Machinery Directive.
You will be expected to manage small projects and have some experience managing all stages of a project including contract supervision and tendering
You will be educated to degree level or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
