Background:
This is an opportunity for you to take the technical lead working on existing and future space flight and support projects
RAL Space (part of STFC) carries out world-class space research and technology development with involvement in over 210 space missions over its 50+ year history. We undertake world-leading space research and technology development, provide space test and ground-based facilities, design and build instruments, analyse and process data and operate S- and X-band ground-station facilities, as well as lead conceptual studies for future missions.
The RAL Space, Space Engineering & Technology Division at STFC are recruiting two Space Systems Engineers in order to support a number of ongoing programmes.

The current portfolio of programmes covers a wide range of applications (Space Instruments, Space Physics, Earth Observation and Ground Support Calibration Equipment) and will provide you with opportunities to provide technical leadership of a range of projects involving ground support, calibration and flight hardware at all stages of the space project lifecycle; from pre-project feasibility studies, through to flight operations.
The immediate work would be on either Space Instrumentation or Ground Support Calibration Equipment depending on the mix of your experience and skill set.

Responsibilities are to include:
* Systems Engineering input to existing and future space (flight and support) projects
* Conceptual instrument design for future space (flight and support) projects
* Leading the requirement definition and flow down process
* Management of design concept during development, preliminary design and detailed design
* Detailed project work in planning, executing and reporting of tests, verification and calibration activities
* Commissioning and operation of space hardware
* Preparation of proposals for future lines of work
* Investigate future ideas with academic and industrial partners
* Management of significant work packages and/or small projects
* Line Management of junior members of staff within the systems engineering group
* Available to travel/work in the UK and overseas for meetings, etc when travel is permitted.


About you
You will hold an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Physics (or equivalent), expertise in at least one space related engineering discipline and experience with design and/or analysis software tools.
You will also be able to provide Aerospace or science research project experience and Systems Engineering on aerospace or scientific instrument development project experience:
* band E: Experience at all project stages
* band F: Experience on multiple projects at all project stages as technical lead.
