Software Developer - Scientific Data Management

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire

Salary: £31,931 - £34,709 or £39,748 - £44,166 per annum (plus annual role-based allowance of up to £3,000)

Full time

Fixed Term 3 Years

As part of UK Research and Innovation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest research organisations and operates at a number of sites within the UK, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and many more around the world.

Based at STFC, the Central Laser Facility (CLF) is building a new laser centre - the Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) and is seeking new team members to help to build this and to contribute to our existing facilities. EPAC is an £81M facility that will use lasers developed by our team to drive new types of novel particle and radiation beams that can be applied to a wide range of problems in science and industry.

We are looking for people like you, developers at all stages of their careers to be a part of our friendly and enthusiastic team. CLF will have a hybrid working arrangement with the option of partial remote working.

About the Role

EPAC requires high-volume data acquisition, processing and management. The data management system in EPAC will have several modules with interfaces to the control system, an Apache Kafka based data broker, display and storage systems. Your main role will be to develop some of these modules and link them together. The role will also involve handling and processing of large data sets.

You will work in collaboration with CLF's control system group as well as data management experts in other large facilities in RAL: the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and Diamond Light Source.

About You

You will have a degree or equivalent experience in computer science, software engineering, or a strongly related STEM subject with significant software development experience.

You will have a strong background in programming with experience in C, C#, C++, Python, Java or similar languages. Experience in handling large volume of scientific data and parallel computing, distributed systems and/or data broker solutions such as Apache Kafka would be advantageous.

The role requires the candidate to be self-motivated, to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a highly organised approach to work.

About the Central Laser Facility

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world's leading laser centres, providing scientists mainly from the UK and continental Europe with access to an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology. The CLF has around 180 staff and its function - user facility, international research - makes it a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place. It has a welcoming and inclusive culture, and you will find that people will naturally help and support you.

Employee Benefits:

We are offering a fixed term position that provide a whole host of family friendly benefits including; 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays), an excellent pension scheme, employee shopping/travel discounts, a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance.

UKRI is an Equal Opportunity & Disability Confident Employer.

To Apply

Applicants are required to include a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role.

The closing date for applications is 18th July 2021, however applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
