Job Description

Who are we looking for?

Several exciting opportunities have opened up to for Manufacturing Engineers or Scientists to join our team based at either Culham or Rotherham sites. You will be joining the Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Qualification Group which undertakes research and testing projects for the development and qualification of novel component manufacturing solutions, in support of Tokamak projects such as ITER, DEMO, STEP and others. This includes assessment and NDE inspection of existing components as well as advancing the manufacturability of new component designs for future projects. You will be supporting the departments within the organisation during projects.

These projects are all directly concerned with using state of the art manufacturing and testing methodologies to help deliver commercially viable nuclear fusion in the UK.

What will you be responsible for?

- Driving advanced manufacturing projects that may cover the full range of Technology Readiness Level (TRL)

- Using experience to contribute and provide state-of-the-art knowledge to UKAEA colleagues concerning advanced manufacturing and/or NDE inspection, recommending testing solutions as needed and drive development in areas of expertise.

- Working both within multi-disciplinary teams and acting as a technical lead on projects

- Working with external collaborators creating links in order to complement UKAEA's internal capability, offer expert knowledge to facilitate new project proposals.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

You will need to have degree, or preferably higher, in materials, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, or related science.

Specialist knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas – manufacturing and processing of materials, additive manufacturing, NDT and in situ monitoring, welding and joining, design of experiments, qualification and certification.

Experience in project scoping, research proposal preparation, project management and delivery

Experience of developing complex experiments and testing equipment

Excellent verbal presentation and report writing skills

Experience of dealing with project stakeholders, customers, and internal staff at all levels

Desirable skills, experience and competence

Demonstrable experience of component design activities in a manufacturing environment (requirements, technical specification, concept design, detailed design, design reviews, procurement, etc)

Demonstrable experience of additive manufacturing and advanced welding and joining techniques

Demonstrable experience of NDT and associated inspection and monitoring technologies

Possession of, or significant progress towards, accreditation with a professional body (e.g. CEng)
