Change tomorrow: lead the quality and delivery of specialist MEICA works.

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife

Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) is home to our specialised group of mechanical and electrical engineers. We look after water resources, flood risk and navigation, as well as managing our asset stock. The team provide high-quality technical and managerial instruction to maintain standards and quality across technical, safety, legal, environmental and operational requirements nationwide.

The role

In this role, you'll lead and manage a specialised group of mechanical and electrical engineers. You'll be accountable for the quality and delivery of specialist MEICA works by your team, who will provide an essential role in managing the Environment Agency’s asset stock (including water resources, flood risk and navigation).

You'll also be responsible for providing technical and managerial instruction, monitoring quality and advising on what’s needed to meet specialist MEICA technical, safety, legal, environmental and operations requirements across the range of assets.

As a Supra Area MEICA team leader, you’ll be part of a national community of peers and national assurance teams and your ability to work with and contribute to these virtual teams is a key element of the role.

We have recently received ISO55001 Asset Management accreditation, and as such, you’ll be working with us to develop a world-class asset management organisation.

The person

We’re looking for a professionally qualified mechanical or electrical engineer who holds a chartered professional registration. In addition, a knowledge of MEICA maintenance management including systems such as computerised maintenance management is required. You’ll also need to show relevant experience in the following areas:

• Leading people

• Managing change

• Influencing and persuading others

• Focusing on customers and partners

• Managing incidents

• Maintenance Management Strategies

• Asset Management and Technical support

• Asset demands, risk, reliability and performance of 24/7 operational sites

Travel throughout the area and occasionally across the country is required, for which a lease car will be provided.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements.

We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.

Company

Within England we’re responsible for:

  • regulating major industry and waste
  • treatment of contaminated land
  • water quality and resources
  • fisheries
  • inland river, estuary and harbour navigations
  • conservation and ecology

We are also responsible for managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea.

Lead local flood authorities are responsible for managing the risk of flooding from surface water, groundwater and ordinary watercourses and lead on community recovery, including making sandbags available to those that need them.
