Environment Agency: Flood & Coastal Risk Management
Electrical/Mechanical Senior Engineer
Grade 6: £46,374 (plus £6,000 for Chartered MEICA or IMechE status)
Look forward to tomorrow: elevate your engineering ambition
We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.
The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.
Our Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) team looks after and upgrades all our systems and assets. From flood risk pumping stations to water control structures and across our wider business – the team prioritises, plans and delivers a programme of works that spans technical assurance, statutory compliance, carbon reduction and capital delivery. It’s a team that homes, businesses and the environment simply can’t do without.
You’ll be the senior technical authority behind a range of projects, and a key member of our flood response. As well requiring technical, electrical and instrumentation expertise, it’s something that calls for close collaborations across the Environment Agency and our partners, and occasionally stepping up to act on behalf of your area Team Lead.
In practice, your core focus will be on keeping our assets in perfect condition. You’ll provide expert technical advice to colleagues, and ensure everything meets British and European electrical standards. Following our recent ISO55001 Asset Management Accreditation, there’ll be relationships with external contractors to manage too.
With a BEng in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), it’s vital you’re a registered IMechE or IET-certified engineer who understands complex MEICA structures. You’ll bring a passion for fusing resilience, innovation and efficiency into design. And you’ll also bring a deep knowledge of industry standards and CDM 2015. The technical leadership that comes with the role should also appeal to your drive to instil best practice wherever you go.
Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.
There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.
The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
