Environment Agency: Flood & Coastal Risk Management

Electrical/Mechanical/Instrumentation Team Member

Grade 3: £23, 963 (plus £3,000 for Incorporated MEICA status)

Look forward to tomorrow: elevate your engineering ambition

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) team looks after and upgrades all our systems and assets. From flood risk pumping stations to water control structures and across our wider business – the team prioritises, plans and delivers a programme of works that spans technical assurance, statutory compliance, carbon reduction and capital delivery. It’s a team that homes, businesses and the environment simply can’t do without.

The role

An exceptional opportunity to get into the industry, this is about co-ordinating, directing and recording the delivery of our MEICA projects.

You’ll use our Computerised Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) to schedule works, plan financially and ensure all the admin’s up to date. We’ll ask you to support us on statutory legislation and industry standards – finding and sending information to colleagues that help us meet regulations. And we’ll also give you the responsibility of managing the data and records behind our assets, so that everyone here can get the answers they need at speed.

The person

While IMechE or IET certification would be great, an ONC or some engineering experience could still make you perfect for the role. We’re looking for a natural organiser with a talent for interpreting technical data and the confidence to quickly pick up systems like our CMMS. Beyond this, it’s your passion and ambition that’ll mark you out, and help you develop your skills.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.

Within England we’re responsible for:

  • regulating major industry and waste
  • treatment of contaminated land
  • water quality and resources
  • fisheries
  • inland river, estuary and harbour navigations
  • conservation and ecology

We are also responsible for managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea.

Lead local flood authorities are responsible for managing the risk of flooding from surface water, groundwater and ordinary watercourses and lead on community recovery, including making sandbags available to those that need them.
