Are you looking for a change and want to help tackle some of the big issues challenging us today?
Reducing the cost of the next generation of batteries?
Better diagnosis for brain cancer?
Supporting research around COVID-19?
As an Engineer at Diamond you could have a critical role working with leading scientists to tackle some of these big issues.
About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Engineering at Diamond enables our scientists to use synchrotron light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
At Diamond we are currently planning a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer to join our team, developing state of the art facilities to deliver ground-breaking scientific research.
This role will work on the development of beamlines, many of which are supporting research in life science including work directly related to COVID-19.
You will play a critical role in working collaboratively with scientists, technicians and other engineers.
This position will also make a significant contribution to the Diamond-II upgrade.
About You
Candidates should have substantial experience in the delivery of unique complex scientific equipment including developing specifications, concept designs, taking detailed designs through to manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning.
You will have experience in designing systems that operate under challenging conditions such as Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic temperatures.
You will display the excellent knowledge of engineering drawings and 3D modelling systems and familiar with modern manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing techniques
You will be confident in doing design risk assessments and understand the requirements of such directives as the Machinery Directive.
You will be expected to manage small projects and have some experience managing all stages of a project including contract supervision and tendering
Good communication skills are critical, and the ability to discuss ideas, present possible solutions, debate and collaborate at all stages of the projects is essential.
You will be educated to degree level or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
To Apply
As part of your application, please attach an additional document of maximum 1 side of A4 consisting of text (max 250 words) and images to describe the most challenging or exciting engineering project you have been involved in, in the workplace since finishing your academic studies.
Your example should describe the particular technical challenges faced and your specific responsibilities; such as your role, what you delivered/achieved, any major problems or difficulties and how you overcame them, and any technical solutions you wish to use to highlight your suitability for this role.
The initial closing date will be 15th August 2021, however, applications will be reviewed and interviewed on an ongoing basis.
