Who are we looking for?

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Materials Engineer to work within our Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) team who are dedicated to the development and enhancement of nuclear materials, ranging from low to high TRL (technology readiness level). The team carry out a number of activities such as microstructural design, evaluation of the impact on properties arising from novel manufacturing and joining at interfaces and combinatorial load impact assessments under irradiation or corrosive conditions, to name but a few.

What will you be responsible for?

Providing leadership for the steels / multifunctional corrosion barriers / composites material development activities.

Organising and coordinating research projects, arranging specimens / data procurement, developing a suitable scope of work, securing funding and resources for sample preparation, testing and modelling activities.

Working with multi-disciplinary teams to develop material requirements alongside generating innovative novel materials solutions to aid in solving engineering problems.

Developing collaborations with external stakeholders in order to complement our internal testing capability and obtain access to expertise and facilities internationally.

Building and providing management to a small team of material scientists and engineers, providing research direction and allocating them to projects as required.

Please note that this role may include international travel and you will be expected to work with radioactive materials and / or beamline facilities.

Essential skills, experience and competence required

A degree or equivalent experience in materials science, physics, chemistry or related and relevant subject as well as demonstrated leadership of research projects and programmes

Ability to work with uncertain and changing technical requirements

Experience in leadership / line management

Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment / materials research group / experimental campaign.

You will also possess specialist experience in one of the following areas:

Steels (ideally including high-temperature steels and nanostructured variants such as oxide dispersion strengthened steels) OR

Corrosion and / or hydrogen permeation barrier and coating materials (demonstrable experience in the areas of non-aqueous corrosion protection and/or thermal barrier coatings is particularly welcomed) OR

Composites and non-metallic materials (experience of silicon carbide composites is beneficial).

Desirable skills, experience and competence

A PhD in materials science or related area

Prior experience of materials processing OR development OR analysis OR modelling OR qualification for engineering applications

A good understanding of nuclear environments and irradiation damage

Experience of high-resolution analytical instruments (SEM, XRD, TEM etc.) OR experience with Fortran / C# /FEA type models OR experience in engineering design codes

A strong publication track-record

Experience in preparing funding grant applications
