About the Central Laser Facility

About the role
We have an opportunity for two motivated individuals to join our Laser Interlocks team. This small team supports over 40 laser areas and carries out a wide array of tasks related to the design, procurement, build, installation, support and development of safety PLC-based controls systems, that contribute to the safe and controlled use of high power laser systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading in the design, build, installation, commissioning, maintenance and documentation of PLC based laser safety interlock systems.
- Management of design and installation staff/contractors.
- Fault finding of electrical equipment and control systems.
- Developing PLC/SCADA software, writing test procedures and testing control logic.
The role requires the individual to be self-motivated, to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will work closely with research scientists, electrical engineers and leading university research groups from Europe and the UK.
You will have an HNC (or equivalent) in a STEM subject plus a recognised apprenticeship (or equivalent) in a relevant area along with a good working knowledge of PLC programming. You will also have the ability to work from technical drawings and understand circuit diagrams.
You will have a strong ability to think creatively in solving problems, showing initiative and evaluating alternative courses of action where necessary.
In addition you will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be innovative and inquisitive, with a desire to gain new skills in a broad range of areas.
To be considered for the Engineer position, you will have a degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate Engineering discipline, or have a strong Functional Safety background. You will have experience in project delivery, design, installation or commissioning of control systems, you will also have in depth experience with Safety PLC's.
