UK ATC Senior Engineers

The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) is the UK’s National Centre for the design and production of state-of-the-art astronomical instrumentation and systems. It provides a friendly and flexible environment, on a beautiful site combining historic architecture with state of the art modern laboratories.

Located at Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE), the UK ATC is set against a heritage of astronomical instrument building within the City. A high-tech engineering facility, the pioneering breakthroughs that have come out of this facility have helped us to learn more about the Universe around us and have produced benefits for us here on Earth.

Projects our engineering teams are currently working on include:

  • ‘First light’ spectrographs - HARMONI and METIS. These instruments will be installed on the Extremely Large Telescope, or ELT. This will be the largest visible and infrared telescope ever built.

  • MOONS - the Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph. MOONS is a unique, visible and near-IR multi-object spectrograph that forms part of the Very Large Telescope (VLT).

  • The MIRI Instrument – one of four science instruments that will be on board the James Webb Space Telescope. This will be the most complex telescope ever flown. It will travel a million miles from Earth, unfold to the size of a tennis-court, and detect infrared light.

To support these and future pioneering engineering projects we have a number of exciting opportunities within our senior engineering team. Each of these roles offer exciting and diverse challenges, with collaboration between these fields of expertise a key factor in our success.
