About Us
Diamond Light Source is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. Our facility houses the UK’s synchrotron light source, a giant microscope that can produce beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to probe the structure and composition of matter. From viruses and vaccines, to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology, it underpins research and innovation for more than 8000 scientists, with over 90 companies already paying for its services.
About the Role
The development of synchrotron technology proceeds at a relentless pace and requires a cutting edge and exceptional IT infrastructure to support this critical work. Advances in data management, data storage, automation and remote access ensure Diamond remains world-class and world-leading. As a result we are now searching for an IT Leader who can drive our IT strategy within our specialist scientific computing services and core infrastructure.
You will provide the vision and future strategy to enhance and optimise our centre, working closely with our other IT Leaders and the software groups to understand strategic drivers and tactical needs. You will ensure we can provide technically innovative solutions that meet our organisation requirements with the necessary usability, technical stability and scalability. You’ll have overall responsibility for planning, acquisition, deployment, and maintenance of state-of-the art HTC hardware and software resources as well as the oversight of datacentre infrastructure.
One of the defining features of many modern scientific facilities, from hadron colliders to gene sequencing factories, is the avalanche of data they generate. We will require you to develop and design a 5 year strategy to substantially expand our IT hardware (disk farms and compute clusters) to support an additional data centre, of around 1MW capacity.
About You
You will have a thorough understanding of advanced and High-Performance Computing (HPC) at research institutions or industry, from both a traditional sense and with regard to emerging technologies and paradigms, including accelerator technologies, cloud computing and data-intensive research.
Your background will cover implementing and leading HTC solutions, including successful IT delivery and support. Make no mistake, the HTC solution will be demanding and we require individuals who have experience working with extremely large data sets and very high data rates.
You will have strong managerial experience and the ability to deliver inspirational leadership to cross-functional teams, directing change, project management and IT transformation.
Benefits
With highly-advanced technology at your disposal and a wide range of training and mentoring opportunities available, Diamond is an excellent choice for those looking to enhance their skills and experience.
We offer an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an industry-leading pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.

Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.
